I am seeking feedback on setting a mileage interval for oil changes...

I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler sport with the 3.6L pentastar v-6 and 6-speed manual transmission; I just hit 2600 miles and the dealer just did an oil change @ 50 miles ago; they use u bulk Pennzoil conventional 5w30 and appropriate Mopar element filter (part # 68079744AB); I know there is an oil life monitor on-board, but the dealership keeps pushing 3 months/3000 miles at me...I want to establish something in between the 3k miles the dealer cites and the 'extended' 8k miles the Jeep manual calls for (I figure 4250-5000 miles is feasible)

the majority of my driving is local (to-from work; multiple stops for errands, stop-n-go traffic @ 10 miles each way with 'open' runs for @ 3.5 to 5 miles depending on traffic lights and traffic congestion) with some highway use, and limited 4 x 4 use (4WD high, 2nd gear, under 20 mph for @ 1.5 - 3 miles or 4WD high, 4th of 5th gear, stop-n-go traffic going to-from work)

I plan on having the dealership do the next 3 oil changes (freebies written into the sales contract), so the PYB 5w30 and filter I stated is what will be used; thanks for your feedback!

I have nearly identical driving conditions as the OP and I go one year, two months in between oil changes. That is about how long it takes me to hit 15,000 miles. No oil related failure. NO failure of any kind and were talking about a 1999 SUV.

I thought 4WD on pavement caused significant stresses on the drivetrain...

Very bad for it ...

let me carify...the 4WD on pavement is during the recent snowfalls when the roads aren't cleared to pavement...not DRY roads & the shorter runs are offroad (gravel alleys and dirt roads)

In a new vehicle I would run to 8k with a good quality full synth oil.

If 5w30 is the specced viscosity I would run that too.

If you were concerned you could do some UOA.

But if 8k is fine for warranty and the handbook says it is fine then I would go for it.

8k is nothing for a petrol engine with synthetic oil.

The price of oil in the US is such that I don't see why you would want to "save" money going with dino oil.

Has anybody ever seen an engine sludged up when run on synthetic oil?

Unless it has been neglected and run many, many miles past the normal OCI I don't think you will.

I would use Mobil 1 EP 5w30 or Mobil 1 5w30.

Interestingly the 2013 is specced for 5w20 on the Mobil website, I had a look on the US site as we don't get that vehicle in the UK.

But I am a Mobil junkie, just put it in the Taxi and it runs nice.

I change mine every 3000 miles 5w30 with the ms6395 spec mine is severe duty though. Valvoline and Mopar filter.

Yes, but unlike the OP you don't have a warranty to be concerned about. Can't say I'd suggest anything but following the owner's manual for a vehicle under warranty.

Forget the dealer advice and check your owners manual for oil specs and proper viscosity. Make sure you have the proper oil and let the OLM do it's thing. If your OM states to use a synthetic oil that should be what you use, if no mention of synthetic then a quality conventional will serve just as well. An oci of 8k is not out of the realm of a conventional oil. Unless it's a requirement synthetic oils are more hype than help.

Would the mopar filters be able to handle longer oil change intervals?

I also have a pentastar engine and its our minivan... I just got purolator classic oil filters from amazon when it was on sale few months ago.. it was like $4 each filter ... would these filters be able to handle 5-6k miles intervals?

3/3000 is just the dealer trying to make some extra cash by doing OC's sooner than needed. Chrysler(Jeep) allows for up to 6 months and 8000 miles( maximum allowed for even if following the OLM ). So IMO a 6 month/5000 mile OCI sounds about right for what you want to do. PYB 5W30 and a MOPAR filter will be fine for 6/5000.

5-6K is no problem for either the Mopar or Purolator Classic.
