Help me plan a strategy for a neglected Kia

A lot of different opinions here, here's mine. I'd get Rislone High Mileage Oil Treatment, 3 bottles at Walmart with some Supertech synthetic oil and two oil filters. I'd start with clean oil and a new filter with two bottles of the Rislone HM added and run it 100 miles. Don't over fill it. Dump the oil and filter at 100 miles. Add fresh oil and a bottle of the Rislone HM and run it for 4K miles. Then change the oil again along with the filter. At that point you can add another bottle of Rislone or leave it alone and keep the OCI to about 5K miles with a good synthetic oil. Keep in mind an engine damaged from neglect might not benefit at all from any of the suggestions here.

absolutely no rudeness intended, but this issue never came up before tying the knot?

the neglected kia obviously needs a good going over: brakes, tires, all fluids, spark plugs, filters…

o.p. is doing what a good husband does. i just hope that there are no other surprises.

The irony of anyone marrying a "vehicle maintenance neglectful" gal is stunning. She'd better be a good cook!

(kidding)

She didn’t have a dad, so no one taught her how to take care of these things… but yeah, it definitely raised a red flag.

It honestly never crossed my mind. I just assumed she took care of it herself. She’s a big girl (47yo) you’d think she’d have figured it out by now.

Look at my previous post. Validate the issue first, then do "something." Post pictures here, it will garner alot more attention and better suggestions.

You didnt say what year Kia it is, but here is a 12-18 procedure to remove the valve cover, its extremely easy.

She is doing a daily 40-mile commute, miles will be put on relatively quick. Just change the oil every 2-3k when convenient with a sale oil and motor on.

So my lovely new bride has finally let me take over the maintenance on her Kia Forte. I was horrified to find her oil filter was dated 10/19. I asked her when the last time she had her oil changed, and she gave me a puzzled look. I tried not to get angry, and just took a walk. About 3 quarts came out when I drained it. I’m guessing that oil had 25-30k on it, looking at her title paperwork and when she bought it. I’m sure the thing has more sludge than I know what to do with. So I filled it with Supertech and a Fram synthetic filter. Plan on changing that oil again in about a month. I ordered HPL’s engine clean tonight. I think next month I’ll add that. Obviously I’ll be changing the filter too.

Anyone have any advice on what I should do to try and make the best of this situation? I would assume short intervals on filters is definitely called for. Once I put that HPL in it, I assume it’s best to run it a few thousand miles before replacing it. But filters I ASSume are going to get plugged up pretty quickly. I ordered a filter cutting tool tonight so I can visually inspect the filters to make sure I’m on the right track. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not really in a position to replace her car at this point, because I just bought myself a new car last month. I guess if I absolutely have to, I can but I don’t like the idea of having two car payments.
Sell it. The quicker the better. Tell her she’s worth the upgrade 😉

I actually believe that you're serious.

When you date someone, instead of asking if they like cats or dogs, you ask them how often they change their oil.... What if they change it "whenever the Jiffy Lube sticker says" ?
