Here is my engine inventory that lives in Wisconsin. Everything lives inside except the Silverado which has cold starts below Zero in the mornings and after work.

2003 Chev Trailblazer 4.2 L6 - Wife drives 3-4 150 mile round trips a week with some city in between. Currently has 16000 miles last two OCI were M1 5-30 about due for another.

2002 Chev Silverado 5.3 V8 - I drive 85% city with most trips under 3 miles in which the temp barely rises. Currently has only 12000 in almost 3 years. Changed to M1 5-30 at 10000 miles and is already pretty dark. Was run on QuickLube Pennzoil 5-30 before that changed at 500, 2500, 5000, 7500. I am real concerned at the very short trips this vehicle sees.

2003 Harley VRod 1130 cc Wet Clutch - Changed to Syn3 at 600 miles and 2700 for winter storage. Changed to Amsoil VTwin 20-50 at 5576 and that were it sits now. Plan on continueing this oil.

Briggs Straton 21.5 hp Intek Vtwin in a lawn tractor that gets ridden twice a week in the summer for about 1.5 hours at a time. This engine does use a filter crossable to a Chrysler 4cyl. Has been on Pennzoil HD30 for last 2 summers.

20 year old Ariens SnoThro with 5hp Tecuseah that was given to me by my father when he purchased a new one. Oil was changed maybe every third year and on my first change the old oil drained grey. Put in Pennzoil 5-30 ran it through 2 snowfalls and changed again. Used to smoke very little at start up however I used the rest of my 2 stroke mix from Stihl weed trimmer in it and it seems to have cleaned up the rings. Now it does not smoke and has not used a drop of oil all winter.

Now with all the sales going on I have a stock pile (small compared to some) of oils on the shelf.

25 qt Havoline Syn 5-30
7 qt Kendall Syn Blend 5-30
14 qt Mobil 1 5-30 Blue Cap 8-SL 6-SM
5 qt MaxLife Dino 10-30
6 qt Valvoline DuraBlend 5-30

Suggestions please. I am not intersted in the longest OCI just the best protection for each engine. Again this was all sale oil or FREE.

Thank You
Ken

I really don't have the whole answer, but it seems to me the first concern would be what to run in the short-tripper Silverado. Perhaps the M1?

Also you don't have anything listed that would be good for the Harley as it is all a bit thin for that.

I am also very concerned with the short tripper. In the V-Rod I am currently running the Amsoil V-Twin 20w-50 which I used to change out the HD Syn3 when I put it away for winter.

Suggestions Please
Thanks

So I was thinking about that short tripper. At 3 mile trips it probably should have an oil with a high TBN (now I am not that well versed on this parameter, but...) which I believe stands for Total Base Neutral and is a measure of how much acids an oil can handle. My collection of datasheets show the Maxlife and Durablend have TBN of 8 and the Havoline Synthetic is 8.6. You'd have to look the other two up, but I believe synthetic is supposed to better handle acids.

You will get a lot of acidic fallout from the short trips that does not burn off because the oil does not get very hot. One solution is to take a longer trip periodically.

Another possiblity is to use Lube Control (site sponsor), which I have never tried, but the general concensus on this site is it can help extend the oil life by handling acids.

That said, I am wide open for many BIOTG folks to correct me (that way you get an answer and I learn something)

. But I think I am more or less correct.
