Help me pick 1 of 3 oils for my 800hp E63s (overwhelmed)

I would run the PP Euro 5W-40, Ravenol VST 5W-40, Motul XCess Gen 2 5W-40. Maybe even Mobil 1 X2 5W-50. You are significantly outside the factory tune. The only 0W-40 I would consider is the M1 ESP X4 0W-40 with its 3.8 HTHS.

Mb says 0w40 or 5w40 only.
MB chose that based on stock engine output. Those forces are real and laws of physics are in charge. They don’t care what MB says. I would want HTHS viscosity above probably 4.5 cP. Minimum oil film thickness does not vary linearly with viscosity. It is more complicated than this, but it is more like the square root of viscosity. That simplified rule states that doubling film thickness requires 4 times the viscosity.

How you drive it does matter, obviously. Flooring it often while the oil is hot or track sessions will cause more of a thin-film lubrication issue than gentle driving.

Mb says 0w40 or 5w40 only. Any person I know making considerably more power than me on the same platform, including guys with built motors, still all run those two. I'm not saying a 50w would be wrong, I just feel comfortable being by the "book" for now. Also not trying to open a new can of worms / discussion.

Thanks for the reply, I'll keep that in mind. In that scenario I don't know what you mean by being below 2k rpm, but I'm assuming you mean generally lugging the engine at low speed in a gear that is too high?
You don't have to worry about LSPI with that engine!

I think I can find the Motul XCess Gen 2 5W-40 locally and maybe ravenol, would they habe a higher HTHS and/or be a better choice than the 3 i listed?

Edit : I found the motul XCess Gen 2 at another store. Tempted to go that route if it's going to be any better. It's only 57 CAD for a 5 litre jug. Was expecting closer to 80

Also on a side note, I just ran a half of tank of fuel with a single bottle of techron fuel system cleaner through the car. Am I safe to run on this oil if I move my oil change appointment back another week while I decide on oil?

"Better" is hard to say. PP Euro is probably just as good if it's cheaper. The only benefit to the Motul is they actually publish the HTHS, whereas we have to guess it with PP Euro. I would lean to the PP Euro, Motul, or Ravenol as those are going to be your higher HTHS choices of the group if you must stay with a 40 grade.

Yes, one bottle of techron should not do much to your oil.

When I uses chat gpt it says the Mobil 1 0w40 HTHS is 3.7, the Castrol is 3.7 and the motul 5w40 is 3.8. But when I pull up the data sheets for the mobile 1 and Castrol, it doesn't actually say on them.

Since we are going into winter soon, im tempted to just grab the mobile 1 0w40 which is on sale for 36 CAD (25 usd) a jug. Just run it up until summer comes around and revisit the discussion with either a motul, ravenol, HPL or even a 50 weight. I'll probably only put 3k miles on the oil until then.

And here I thought this thread would make things more clear and easy. I'm more unclear than ever lol.

Unless you're somewhere super cold you can just run the 5W-40 also. M1 in this formula was measured at 3.6 by HPL in another thread. The Castrol we do not know for the current formula. The PP Euro was once 3.88. You'll be ok with any of these choices including the M1 0W-40.

If you're dead set on a 0W-40 for winter then I would recommend the M1 ESP X4 0W-40, it has 3.8 HTHS and holds viscosity better according to what analyses we have seen.

Chat GPT is not a reliable source of truth. At best it can pull from old forum posts, at worst it will just make things up to give you a correct-sounding answer. Almost no chance they are scraping a bunch of oil PDS pdfs and even if they were, training data is out of date quickly.

All of those three are great. There are some out there that are better, but cost and availability are always a concern. If I had to choose between the three, I would go with Pennzoil Euro 5w40. Marginally higher HTHS. I can't get that locally, so in my case I'd go with Castrol 0w40 since my local Walmart has it under $5/qt. I have seen people use M1 0w40 FS on cars pushing 150+ hp per cylinder (300+ hp/L) without any problems, I wouldn't stress about going to a 50 grade just for that, unless you're on ethanol or tracking it (not drag racing).
Nothing wrong with doing that, and there are even thicker 40 grade options too. Not sure it's worth the money at sub-5k oil changes though.

My daughter drives the Sea to Sky highway between Whistler and Vancouver (LGH) all year with 15w40 in her L5P Duramax and 10w40 in her 2022 3.6L Acadia.
People living in the lower mainland think it’s cold when it gets below 5C.
I’d avoid shopping for HTHS. Any given engine only needs so much to keep the main and rod bearings happy and redundant viscosity only produces heat from fluid friction, reduces power and lowers fuel economy.
The purpose of wide viscosity grades between the winter grade and SAE grade @ 100C, such as 0w40 and 5w50, is to ensure high oil pressure without excessive HTHS.
If you are looking for the highest HTHS vs KV100C, pick a mono grade engine oil.

I decided im going to go grab the motul 5w40 right now, I found it available down the road and it's cheaper than the Castrol and PP for some reason (was quoted 57CAD/41USD per jug). Plus I can keep my oil change appt which I realized was actually tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies, gave me lots to think about. Perhaps I'll try HPL or a 50 weight for next summer.

Acquired.
