oil change is coming up in about 150 miles.

I got this truck not that long ago so I dont know what the last owner was using, I am leaning toward the M1 5w30, the manual calls for 5w30

Also, Oklahoma weather here, so take that into consideration.

Is 0w-30 GC (Castrol Syntec) an option? It's at Autozone BTW.

Also, before going to a synthetic (unless it was used previously) I would flush out the engine using Auto-RX.

Well, that's where it gets sticky.

Mobil 1 xw-30 weights are pretty thin. The GC 0w-30 is a bit thicker.

You will have to choose between the thin or thick side. Everyone has their opinion.

I'd go with the GC 1st and see how it goes.

Actually Ford now recommends 5W-20 for that engine. They have back recommended it for all the SOHC 4.6L V-8.

That said you have to decide how thick a oil you like.

All viscosities below at 100&#176C (212&#176F).

Results from actual VOA's

Motorcraft 5W-20 Blend = 8.9 cSt
Motorcraft 5W-30 Blend = 11.1 cSt
Mobil 1 10W-30 = 10.5 cSt
German Castrol Syntec 0W-30 = 12.3 cSt

For my money I would run Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend in the winter and Motorcraft 10W-30 Synthetic Blend in the summer (10W-30 Blend will not be out until spring).

With the designed in shear of "Energy Conserving" 5W-30 I cant figure out any reason not to start with 5W-20 to begin with.

For $1.42 Qt at Wal-Mart Motorcraft Blend is hard to beat for 5,000 mi oil changes.

For 10,000 mi changes the Autozone's German Castrol Syntec 0W-30 would be hard to beat.
