Ok so we think we know what were gonna do with my friends metro. But I need to choose a really good Conventional oil. One with a strong additive pack and good cleaning properties.

I was thinking of the following choices.

1. Castrol GTX
2. Havoline
3. SuperTech
4. Penzoil
5. Quaker
6. Rotella-T

Is there anything else commonly available thats good? Remember we want something that will have a very strong cleaning power.

The Castrol GTX is considered a good oil, especially for smaller engines. We have a new Honda, and the dealership is offering its customers the full Castrol line. We chose the GTX.

In the past, in my Jeep, I used Mobil conventional oil, before switching to Mobil 1. I had no trouble with the Mobil conventional, and there was no "engine gunk" problem when I switched to the Mobil 1 at 100,000 miles.

Mobil has a new line of oils that are being discussed on this site. Also, you can check out these oils at www.mobiloil.com.

I've read some good things about Havoline oils and they, along with the Castrol and Mobil, are pretty easy to find.

Im not sure standard dino oils are good for cleaning but if I had to choose one then Id go with one that has a 50% synthetic base like Motorcraft, Kendall, Phillips troparctic, or Conoco. Starting with cleaner oil will help some with cleaning I guess. They cost about the same as normal dino oils.

Rotella T 5W-40 is your best bet from that list. While oils don't clean that much, those that come with higher diesel ratings should clean more compared to those without them.

If you don't want to spring for the Rotella T synthetic, I'd get a 15w40 HDEO such as Delo 400 and use a 5W-20 to cut it down to around a 10w30.

This blending calculator could be useful in determining a good ratio.

How do you know they have a 50% synthetic base?

Can you point me to some info that supports this?

Thats one of the things that has always bothered me about blends...you never know what you get, most manufacturers won't release the info about percentages.

Castrol GTX Diesel Would be suitable plus its excellent for Cleanliness its suitable for Diesel & Gasoline. Do a search & www.castrolusa.com I have used it for years formerly known as RX Super. Its a Real Ball Bighter Oil. Cheers....

Its a Fleet Oil used by many big transport companies Cars & Trucks..

It's not listed, but I recomend Chevron Delo 400 until it gets clean then Chevron Supreme from there out.

I think all of them will keep an engine clean because I've used 4 different brands in 1 truck over 100k miles and the fill tube and top of the head still look like new.

Use a can of BG 44K in the gas tank to clean the injectors and intake valves.

To clean the engine change the oil before it turns black and use 1/2 bottle of Delvac 1 each time for a year.

From your list, I like the Rotella.

You can tell if the oil is clearing any sludge by its color--I would think. If an HDEO gets black early, that would probably mean it's picking off deposits from inside your engine.

I had good luck with a 2K mile run of Delo in my high mileage '93 Ford Escort. Oil consumption pretty much came to a halt--even after going to a 5W30 oil for winter.

Add Chevron to your list of choices......
Any of the above mentioned will work fine...I use Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment at 1oz to 1 qt of oil...this gives you a great shot of additives to your dino oils for pennies...IMHO this will give you the "cleaning" power you are looking for with dino oils......you can find the Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment VOA here in the gas engine VOA section...good stuff.....

As a general rule, Havoline is more commonly available in the Midwest & Eastern US than it's twin, Chevron Supreme.

I think what Bugshu is referring to is the GRP III content of the ConocoPhillips formulated oils.

Here is the Motorcraft MSDS indicating 75-85% of CAS # 64742-54-7, which is the hydro-treated GRP III base stock used in the ConocoPhillips oils.

Interesting...the MSDS lists several oils all showing the 75-85% hydro-treated group III but only the 5w-20 and the 5w30 are shown as "Premium Synthetic blend"!! The 10w30 is shown as "Super Premium" and the 10w-40 as "Premium" All on the same MSDS!

I for one have received at least two emails from Phillips lubricants that indicate in no uncertain terms that Trop Artic 5w30 and the new 10/30 are a minimum of %50 synth blend.

That's enough for me to support the claim that was made below.

for the money the Phillips Trop Artic, 5w30,or when it comes out 10w30 semi, would be a choice,Castrol,Havoline/Chevron,would make a fine choice in common dino, oil,,,myself i would hunt down a Schaeffer dealer,(on this web under sponsers) and check this product out,the savings of a better lube may pay the difference in fuel savings over the course of oil changes,by the way the Schaeffer has a really good add pac, that will keep your engine clean,to clean a dirty engine Auto rx is great or Amsoil has a engine cleaner that works good........BL
