Hello Forum!. I'll get right to it, i lost my 1 and only key on my used 01 Buick regal i just picked up 4 days ago. had it towed to the Gm dealer, they said "oh we'll cut a key by the vin, then we would be able to test the VATS #, and program, it for $300, okay, great, lets do it, i get a call 2 hrs later that starts off with. "this is not good" he told me that they cut a key by the vin, but it does not turn..

the next step would be to replace the Ign, comes with a key with program, price was $945 i nearly passed out.

Do i have any other options? Thanks,

Was it a PK3 key or a resistor key? The resistor key has what looks like a black chip in it at the base. A PK3 will need to be programmed.

They are doing something wrong. It should be easy.

I have a locksmith going to look at it tonight, but he said "i dont think i can do anything."

Its a resistor key, 1 of 15. But they dont know the key cut is.

What has to happen is that the ignition lock cyl needs to be pulled and the tumblers taken out and documented/recorded so you can cut the key correctly.
Every dealership should have a master tumbler kit.

If this locksmith can't do it, then call another. They do this sort of thing routinely on things like Repos. They have tools that they can use that basically picks the lock tumbler and reads out the key settings as its doing it.

Why's that ? Doesn't it have the 3800 in it ?

Go to any GM dealer with VIN and proof you own the car, done. They can cut a key with the correct chip for the car. I know had to do this on a 99 Lumina. Took 15 mins.

Yes, something is not right here; this is not anywhere near impossible; the advice already given is all good advice. If you are not getting the solutions you need from the dealer or locksmith, go elsewhere until you do.

And there is always a lockset with key swap at the wreckers, no need for spending $945.

Last time I had a GM lockset issue I bought a new (not used) ignition lock and 2 keys off eBay for $20, but it was for an older vehicle than yours.

Ummm? In the OP it states he did that. The key they cut didn't work. They want more money to put a new cylinder in it. The cylinder may already have been swapped.

I just called a good friend that is a locksmith and does this all the time and he said it should cost under $200.00 if the cylinder needs to be replaced add around $90.00
If its more than that the guy either does not know what he is doing or he is trying to rip you off.

Yup, had that happen to me a few times. That is why I always cut a non chipped key and make sure it turns the cylinder before cutting the expensive ones.

One thing about Ford is we can only currently get key codes for 2006MY and newer vehicles. In a couple months it will be 2007MY and up. Also the keys are not tied to a VIN so when people lose their keys and there are like 5 different key options, they have to tell us what it had. Sometimes you can figure it out with other information given, however simple questions like "is you car push button start" or "how many keys were on your remote" gets stares back at me.

I think the latest version of Forscan lets you delete and add keys to the system. You do have to know what you're doing though.

I don't feel that bad about Mercedes keys being $300-$500 now, all they need is the VIN to make a duplicate key.
