Help! DVD "tracks" while playing

Situation is DVD player and TV are less than a year old, no apparent problems, they work with every single DVD I own except for one I just got from eBay. It is a DVD-R, which my player says it plays, and when I play it, it flickers vertically like an old VCR "tracking" type flicker, for lack of a better term. It is newly-burned and I really want it to work, the seller claims there should be no problems with it and that he has sold others with no complaints.

Any ideas on what I can do? I checked all the cable connections, cleaned the DVD with a cleaning machine, to no avail. I really want to show this to my nephew who is coming to visit this weekend so I want to avoid having to send it back to the seller if possible.

Is there another DVD player you can try it on, like a computer DVD-ROM drive for example?

Is this some foreign DVD that might be at 24 fps instead of our 30? I agree with quattro pete, try it on your computer.

Already think I found the problem...I never knew there was such a specific thing, but I thought that "DVD-R" meant any recordable DVD. Apparently the "-" in DVD-R means something, and my player only plays DVD+R, not DVD-R!!!

Sending it back for an exchage...

Try "ripping" it to your computer so you can show your nephew when he comes. videohelp.com has some pointers.

You aren't really busting copyright since you're just trying to get this to work. When the +R shows up destroy what's on your hard drive.

Good idea, thanks. It is a noncopyrighted video that was shot by the person I bought it from, of some displays at the Tokyo Motor Show.
