My wife, who isn't the most conservative driver gets between 26mpg and 27mpg on her daily work drive. 2007 Escape XLS, 2.3L, ATX. It is a pretty darn good little SUV. 2009 Esxape owners are reporting 30mpg with the new 2.5L.

So who's right? Forbes, whose SOURCE is being cited as the IIHS, or, the IIHS?

DOH! I was looking exclusively at the frontal-offset results!!!!

Sorry about that.

Do we have a link to the IIHS overall results (the ones Forbes is citing)? Because I don't see them on their site......

Get rid of the automatic, 4wd, and V6 and learn to shift at the correct time and use momentum. That's where the MPGs are.

I studied this vehicle for work extensively with all the powertrain configurations and unless it is the hybrid or the 4cyl/manual 2wd driven well - you won't get the MPGs.

The hybrid will get the best MPG improvement over the regular model in city driving.

It is physics: mechanical losses (equipment) + momentum in a brick shaped vehicle (driver).

+1000000000

That is what it is all about... for ANY vehicle.

I have a 2009 2.5liter 4-wheel drive with the 6 speed automatic. It's a company car, and I treat it roughly. I get 26-27 mpg on the highway averaging about 80 mph. The lowest I've gotten is 23.5 mpg, which included 25 miles of off-roading and about 1/4 of the total tank in town. I'm really surprised at it's economy.
I am suspicious of this 6-speed lasting a LONG time, though...
