So, I was in Advance Auto yesterday, and they had the Boss filters on the shelf. I picked up a couple different ones, then held the one that matches the number I am using on our vehicles. I am using the Purolator blue synthetic currently, and have used the Pureone in the past, so I know what they feel like. What struck me right away was how heavy the new Boss filters were. Noticeable right away, not a maybe a little heavier, but really easy to tell.
Not sure if it is a thicker can and baseplate or something else, but they feel stout and substantial.

It's easy to make filters heavier when you don't have to be bothered with trivial things like micron ratings and ISO tests.

Seriously I hope they have them fixed, I will never buy them just based on the way they have done business through out this debacle. But hopefully the blissfully ignorant millions who will use them will at least get filters that don't tear.

A Purohater rally here.

The additional can thickness is likely similar to the Bosch Distance Plus filter.

Nothing wrong with a stronger can. I personally like to put a filter wrench on a filter I'm removing without worrying about crushing it.

I've been using the Bosch Distance Plus lately with good success.

The M1 Extended Performance filter I've been using on my Tacoma V6 is quite heavy as well. Much more so than most of the other brands/types that I've used in the past.

People still shying away from the Purolators? I used PureOnes for years until you guys made me nervous and I switched to the M1. On paper the Puro synthetic looks good. But you guys are still making me nervous about going back to the Puro brand! LOL

So basically the Boss is Puro's answer to something like the M1 Extended Performance filter? One designed to last longer than a typical one, correct?

More likely a direct competitor to the FRAM Ultra since the Boss is also rated for 15K OCIs.

The last Puro Syn that was cut open and posted on this site had some pretty wavy media. That seems odd for wire-backed media.

I am going to sit on the sidelines for a long time in terms of Purolator.

I went to an AAP on the 29th. The manager was cleaning up the oil filter section. He was pulling the Fram Ultras and replacing them with Purolator Boss.

He was not swapping out Pure Ones or the Classics.

I did not see any of the Blue Or Red filters in the new stock.

I think AAP's plan is to roll in new stock as the old stock is sold.

We then had a dialog about if any testing had been done. He said he hoped so.

I was not interested in the Boss since I'm not doing extended OCIs.

My brother has a 1997 Civic, and he bought a Boss yesterday to use on the oil change. I still have couple of the Mobil 1 filters in the filter stash. We compared the two. Based on weight alone, the Boss is heavier than the Mobil 1.

I know weight isn't everything, filtration is the key thing. It will be interesting to see how it does.

My brother wants to do a UOA at the end of the oil change. So, we will see.

I'm really not happy with Purolator and this whole tearing issue.

I would like to use Wix, and then not worry about it. But, the thing is, I was using Wix before I starting using the Purolator Blue Synthetic filters. The reason I stopped was because we were having problems with the Wix filters.

I would agree with that. I'd also like to use a filter in which I don't have to worry about the media taking oil flow and tearing, too.

I don't mind. One of the filters we were using, the seal went bad. It didn't leak at first, not when we first did the oil change, but maybe around a thousand miles into it. Noticed the oil spots in the driveway, thankful we caught it before we lost too much oil. First time we have a problem like that, and it hasn't happen since. The seal was distorted and misshaped when we pulled the filter off.

On our tractor, the oil pressure light would come on for a second after starting it, then would go off after the oil started flowing. The anti-drainback valve must not have been working well, and the oil was draining back into the sump. Didn't do it ever before, and it has not done it since switching away from a Wix filter.

Also the Wix air filter my brother put on his car, when he went to change it, the rubber seal was cracked in couple of places. For all we know, it could have been letting dirt and dust into the engine.

I wanted to like Wix and their products, but it just seemed like we were having issues when we shouldn't be.

I agree with KCJeep I won't be buying them either for a long long time... I did not like the way they acted when people started complaining about their tearing and other quality issues. They lost us as a customer that buys a large amount of oil filters for 3 repair shops (we got together a buying group for the best prices) Now we buy Wix.

Are you talking about you or your shop? The reason I asked is that you said you sold your shop. Didn't you?
