VA has this law as well, but it also contains an interesting clause. Basically, you must have your headlights on if your wipers are used in a constant mode. They do not have to be on when using wipers intermittantly (46.2-1030 Sub. A).

I have never cited anyone for this but have given several "friendly reminders" for it. I HAVE cited many for failing to use turn signals (46.2-848). If they are doing this in the course of whipping in and out of traffic, I can raise the violation to reckless driving, specifically signaling (46.2-860). The newer aggressive driving laws have given me alot more to work with when tagging someone for reckless. Happy motoring

Thank you for enforcing these common sense laws, many level-headed motorists appreciate it.

Do you write tickets for running stop signs as well? If so, your my new law enforcement hero. People around here run stops signs right in front of cops with no repercussions.

Do they have stop signs in central NY

I drove from Wellsville to Corning and had the road mostly to myself.

It's probably not the case now ..but on few visits to Cape Cod ..there were no stop signs where one would normally expect one.

Oh yeah, many, many times. Also for running redlights. I write it everytime I see it. It is usually one of the most common violations and can lead to some catastrophic results. What is disturbing is how blase' folks are getting with these. Even when I hammer them, they seem to care not a bit.

Yep, 417 is a lonely road.

Nope, they're go signs around here apparently.

I haven't seen it in print ..nor on the news ..but allegedly when they passed this regulation they also passed one making it mandatory for you to remove all the snow from your car. This is because of a number of accidents being caused by ice sheets flying off of trailers and whatnot. Now I know that this event didn't just start occurring yesterday.

How timely, Gary.

Any of you heard the term "ice missile" before?

Oh yeah, who's buying the reporter's contention that the slab of ice he's holding weighs 20 lbs.?

No ..looked like it would have a tough time topping 5lb. The alloys for my jeep are 20+/-lb.

I've been slammed by sheets of stuff coming off of trucks and stuff. Oddly, it never resulted in any damage that I could find. Just been lucky, I guess. Now I'm surely going to have one do some substantial damage.

I disagree with the stop sign comment. I think stop signs are the biggest waste of fuel. Go to Europe there are 1/2 as many stop signs. I would prefer a system of "right of way". But then we are asking too much of our driving privileges when someone would actually have to be competent as a driver.

Anyhow, I do agree with signaling as I do it 90% of the time.

As you sorta said ..that kind of sensible traffic management works when you have sensible drivers that take driving seriously as a matter of common adoption. Note that you're also referring to a nation where there's a different social management philosophy. I'll venture that they're not raised with the notion that you're supposed to get away with whatever you can ..either legally ..or illegally depending on the state of your super ego (values of society).

In Illinois I've actually seen yield signs in places where I know for a fact that Virginia DOT would put a stop sign, at intersections in residential neighborhoods.

I've also seen where yield signs adjacent to a "porkchop" at a signalized intersection were replaced with STOP signs. Formerly, if you were making a right turn, you didn't need to stop so long as the path is clear, but then they put the STOP signs in so you have to STOP every time, even if the light is GREEN. (How about just putting a signal head there? So if it's green we can go without stopping, and if it's red we stop and then make a right turn when it's safe. How many stops and how much gas needs to be wasted before putting another signal head there is worth the taxpayer expense?)

In one case I made a comment about one of these setups and how much gas it wastes on a local newspaper's forum and apparently someone from the city saw it because they replaced the STOP signs with YIELD signs.

Now if they could just get rid of the protected-only left turn lanes on a road with no median and a center turn lane...
