Head gasket issue?

Not the thermostat...sounds like the water pump impeller blades are wore down.
 
I'm going to have it checked tomorrow for head gasket. I just changed the oil and found no coolant in the oil. But am having it tested for combustion gases in the coolant etc. Then if that isn't the issue. I will do a thermostat, water pump and timing belt and go from there. As that service hasn't been done yet

That could for sure be your issue since those have an inlet side thermostat. If the lower hose is cold it means there is no flow through the radiator.

Vey likely. That's what mine did. The exhaust might smoke and smell like coolant and the oil might also be infected.
