I just cut open two used filters.
You can see that the paper on one has collapsed and stuck together.

Yeah, seriously. I'd like to see what that Donaldson filter would look like if it had to do the job that the other filter did.

I think the point was the cheaper filter didn't do its job, not that it was used at a longer interval. Is this right Widman? What are the filter types and how many miles on each one?

In order to claim this, the two jobs would have had to be identical. Judging by the looks of it, they weren't even close.

More like "He who skimps on maintenance." The one on the right looks like it was run for a couple years, wheras the left-hand one looks like it was filled with fresh oil once then disassembled. Even the metal endcaps is coated in what looks like sludge. If they were run for the same period, I want the right hand one for sure, because the left one is just a rock catcher.

The Donaldson on the left was run 6800 km (4200 miles) with a group II 10w30, CI-4/SL. He has run that brand/type oil for over 100,000 km. The one on the right was run 3300 km (2050 miles) with a group I 15w40 that claims CH-4.

The bypass valve on the bad one was not stuck, and actually felt weak. Obviously as mentioned, poorer maintenance all around. Cheap oil, cheap filter, cheap owner.

I have a hard time thinking that it would be that one dimensional in difference (group 1 to group II). That's half the mileage ..and it had to be a vastly different hour accumulation or service.

Obviously different conditions, you will never get real world twin conditions, but I've always heard of the weak pleats with thin paper folding together rather than filtering.

I will agree with the rest.
One would have to run the filters with the smae oil, same OCI, in the same motor.

The Donaldson dose look of higher quality constrution wise.

One error above, the Donaldson was 8300 km (5200 miles) in a Land Cruiser.
Here is another of the same generic brand as the one on the right above. This was in a Mitsubishi Montero diesel with 4800 km (3000 miles)
The surprise was when we opened it and the top and bottom were separated from the filter media. The glue dissolves into dust between your fingers.

I called the distributor and he came to look. He said we were not supposed to cut them open to see. When pressed he said people want price, so you have to give them price.
