Well I just changed my oil in the lawn tractor
which has a single cylinder OHV 16 HP Vertical
Shaft B&S. I Went from Castrol HD 30w to Havoline
30w with a Purolator PL10241 Oil Filter. I have always used Castrol but with all the praise you
guys have given Havoline I have to give it a try.
I change my oil when I put the tractor away for
the winter and change it now just before leaf
season as it is run hard when used to pickup the
leaves in the fall.I don't see VOA on Havoline
straight 30w have any of you guys used it in the past ??

My Concern is really not with price it is with
protection. Castrol claims not to break down
when hot but even the straight 30w flows awful
thin when warm

"Flowing thin" and "breaking down" don't necessarily mean the same thing.

IF protection, not price, is paramount, then it's synthetic.

I think even the most grueling torture tests would show these two oils neck-and-neck as far as results go.

I'd bet both are currently Group II base oils ... with the Havoline possbly having more anti-wear agents ... but that's just a guess.

Want one of the best 30 weights available? Get Chevron Delo400 in straight 30 ... the one that says "New low wear formula" on the front.

Shearing should not be a concern with a straight weight oils. They shouldn't shear out of grade without significant fuel dilution.

Brett, one of the big-box automotive retailers like Autozone or Advance Auto parts around here carries (carried?) Delo400 in straight 30. I haven't seen it in a while ... but it's been a while since I looked.

I have my sights set on some Delo400 0w30 for use this winter in my Nissan SpecV.

I have seen Delo 30 at Autozone. However, it is old as it has the SJ spec. I would love to find the new, low wear formula with moly.
