hello,

i am looking for a good conventional oil for my older truck with high miles. i was looking at Havoline but it says it has all these deposit shield and all this anti wear additives. so wouldn't that classify it as a synthetic oil?i thought conventional oil was with no additives.

can anyone shed some light on this for me. also what is a good conventional oil that wont mess up my seals or cause leaks with any additives that could hurt my older high mileage truck.

ALL oils (conventional or syn) have additives thankfully.

Without the adds the performance of ANY oil would be poor.

Halvoline, QS, Pennzoil, Valvoline and Mobil 5000 are all excellent oils.

I might suggest (since you vehicle is high mileage) a HM oil...such as Valvoline MaxLife Syn or Blend (5w30). It should help with conditioning your seals so you won't have future leaks. It can be purchased at WalMart in 5 quart jugs.

I use the SYN MaxLife...and am very pleased with it.

If you are concerned about not using oils with higher detergents, I'd go with Formula Shell. Though many feel that Havoline DS is on the thinner side, Formula Shell is a little thicker than DS and is used by some BITOG'ers with good UAOs. I am waiting for the next Walgreens sale to stock up on Formula Shell.

It is my opinion that syns have less additives than dinos, but I'm still collecting info to support my opinion.

Formula Shell is a winner, UOAs have been excellent and the oil can be had pretty cheap at BJ's. I think its like $26 for 12 qt's, works out to be about $2.16 a quart.
