Havoline dino vs. Castrol GTX dino vs. Chevron Sup

I like GTX. No wait, Havoline. Er, make that GTX. OK really, Havoline. What day is is it today? Holy Moly (pun intended) it's almost Saturday. Make that Chevron.

Chevron Supreme in the 5w20 grade has an excellent flash point. Should have a good Noack, and oxidation resistance. Cold weather performance is not so great. On the other hand Castrol essentialy has no specs so why take a chance. Given only those two choices I would go with the Chevron.
 
I like the concept of a conventional oil with extra detergents. If you have concerns about keeping your engine clean and change oil often it may not be a bad idea. It has a low flash point (200C), which is not great for oxidation resistance, but indicates it will have a higher solvency. It probably would be better as a 3000 mile oil. The cold weather performance is about the same as the Chevron Supreme in the 5w20 grade.

Unless you want to change frequently and have a reason to be concerned about sludge, I think I would go for the Chevron.
 
This should be an agrument Chevron vs Castrol. This is due Chevron in it's current SM formula is the same as Havoline. There was never much of a difference anyways. That is after Chevron Corp bought out Texico.
 
I vote for Castrol GTX. I have used all 3, but I went with Castrol due to the low wear numbers it showed in multiple vehicle types in the UOA section. I know it's not as much of a favorite as the Texico oils on this board, but in my area they are the same price. If I could get some of that .59 Chevron in the Midwest, I would probably use that, but for now it is GTX and my vehicles seem to be liking it (UOA's on all 3 are pending in the near future, so I may be changing back based on what they show).
 
sweet guys, thx for the replies. So gtx shows excellent wear #'s? Is there really a diff between GTX start up protection and regular GTX? Does start up really have an impact on engine wear? thanks
 
Any oil that meets your manufacturer's requirements and is changed at a reasonable mileage will let your engine outlast the rest of your car, or until you get bored of it.
 
90% of engine wear is due to start up. I have not researched the difference between the 2 GTX's, but someone else said, I would also go with the GTX due to the low wear numbers it shows on most UOA's.
 
90% is due to start up? lol that sucks, so on some uoa's it doesnt show good wear #'s? i'm gonna open a new post about start up.
