I called the tech service line yesterday and they told me that conventional havoline 5/20, 5/30, and 10/30 SM/GF4 is blended with 490 ppm of moly. What is it's function at these levels? It must be more than a friction modifier.

Why did you have to post this!? Another oil I need to buy and I'm out of space in my shrine!

At that level it's being used as an AW/EP (plus FM) to make up for the lower levels of ZDDP in the GF-4 formulation. I would think it also serves as an antioxidant.

I just purchased a case of the 5w20 at Advance since they had it on sale. I'll be putting that in my Chrysler when I change out the Pennzoil 5w20 that's in there now.

1.) Something had to replace the reduced levels of ZDDP that are suspected of poisoning catalytic converters. There are alternatives. Molybdenum's just one path (albeit a very good one) on the destination to engine-life nirvana.

2.) Compared to what, Magoo - GC or Mojave Desert sand?

I forget which BITOG member it was

but he said that he 'noticed' better MPG with oils that had lots of Moly....compaired to oils with little/no Moly.

I don't know why you think that since I've never been a strong advocate of Castrol products on here. But for the most part (and with the exception of Castrol Syntec) I think Castrol makes good oils. I'm currently using Castrol GTX HM in my mini-van, and will probably continue to since it seems to do well. I've used Pennzoil 5w20 in my Chrysler for over a year, and I briefly tried the German made Castrol 0w30 in it before that.

I've been impressed with the way ChevronTexaco is formulating the new Havoline and the sale at Advance was just the nudge I needed to move from Pennzoil.

G-Man, what van are you using the 5w-20 in? Is it the one speced for 10w30?

I'm not using 5w20 in my van, I'm using Castrol HM 5w30. I'm using 5w20 in my Chrysler 300M, which is spec'd for 10w30.

They were kind of free with their formulation numbers. They told me it contained 1960 calcium, 880 zinc, 770 calcium, 80 boron , 490 moly, and 2400 sulfur. He read it directly off a spec sheet. This kinda of replicates what I've seen in the VOA sections, and MIrrors what we've seen in the UOA sections minus depletion. Does this sound like a stout additive package. Maybe one of our resident chemists can chime in.

I changed to Havoline dino because of the great add pack [IMO], and good reports.
The zinc doesn't seem very low - it's comparable to many others.

Just picked up 4 quarts of Havoline 5w-20 for my sisters 2004 Honda Civic VP (value package) 1.7L 4-banger. Looking forward to trying Havoline for the first time (even if it isn't my car). Based on all the excellent results I've seen here on BITOG with Chevron/Havoline, I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Thanks Drums, after spending so much time here on BITOG I almost feel obligated to try and take care of my family's automotive lubrication needs. First my father's '96 Nissan Altima (used some Motorcraft 5w30 semi-syn), now my sister's Honda Civic. Now if I could just convince my brother to let me service his Porsche Boxster S, I'd be in business.
