The previous owner was using Castrol GTX 5W30 for street use, but the original builder used RED-2001 10W40 for Auto Cross racing. Can I use Havoline 10W40 for street use without undue wear on the Cam & Tappets, or should I change to the high ZDP race oil like PENN grade 1?

Is there any reason the cam and lifters in this are any different from any other windsor cam and lifters? the choice of grade is good, so just buy some.

btw - you can convert that motor to use roller - I have seen it done via special lifters that are retained together in pairs

Bought the Brad Penn 10W40 today. I think the original owner had the the engine built for the most power using hydraulic lifters, since the motor would need to be dropped out the bottom to do valve adjustments. Very tight fit in the Tiger engine bay.

Very cool little car. I had one just out of high school to replace my TR-4.

Mine would run around a 100 mph in second gear. The factory rear gear was like 2.56 or something ridiculously high.

I have a stock 289 in my 65 Mustang. The Brad Penn Semi Syn is the holy grail if you ask old car owners. I asked this forum a while back on reasons to switch or try something else, and mostly the consensus was that it is a good choice. Now, I have the advantage of stopping at the refinery and buying it for $3/quart when I am in that town, so it makes it even better. My Mustang's valve train is the quietest on this oil compared to the others I tried. Mine is a show caliber car, so I only put a few hundred miles a year on it, so I can't comment on oil performance other than subjectively.
