A little over a year ago I left work in my 1996 Dodge Neon when it started to overheat. Gauge rose steadly, casing on water pump broke open and spilled entire contents of the cooling system all over the highway. I drove 6 to 8 miles all the way home with no coolant with the car losing power. Barely got it into the driveway shooting steam like Old Faithful. Well, I let it sit for over a year. Got it back today, along with a $378.00 bill to replace the water pump and timing belt. To my surprise I did not need a ring job done on it. Car drives great, does not smoke. I can only attribute this to Havoline motor oil. i had 10w-30 in it when it happened, have since changed it back to 5w-30 to clean up any junk that may have made its way back into motor, plus the 5w-30 was extra I had on hand at the time. In my own personal opinion, this is the best performing conventional motor oil I have ever used. I will be a loyal user of it in the future from now on.

What was so important that made you drive it home with no coolant in the car?

I had no other way to get home and it was very late. When you only have one car and no one to relie on to help you gotta do what you gotta do to get home.

Wow...after hearing about all the really good UOA's on Havoline, and now this! I had already planned on switching the Explorer over to Havoline, and now I'm convinced that will be a wise choice.

I had a 1981 Delta 88 in 95 that lost a water pump in a similar catastrophic manner. I didn't make it to the offramp before awfull things began to occur to the insides of the engine, this was indicated by a horrible series of metal on metal sound.

I will always miss you Brown Bomb, you only left me stranded once

I never thought much about oil baqck then, but I think I changed it once in 1 year with quakker state at Walmart

I kept it topped off but I dam not sure a better oil would have saved the beast.

I agree & so do alot of posters here -- that in the last three months I've been posting at this site, the best UOAs with dinos are coming from Havoline and Pennzoil. I think Mobil Drive Clean 5000 is going to be a winner too... just don't understand the very-very few UOAs on that new brand since Mobil-1 is so popular here at BITOG.

bighead,
You will have your answer in a couple of months. I am running Havoline 10w30 synthetic in my wife's Expedition as we speak.

I am going to send a sample to Blackstone after 4-5k. Stay tuned.

I'm also using 10w30 Havoline in my sons beater ('95 Altima w/240K+ miles) and my daughters '99 Protege (47K+). I was kind of surprised by the manual calling for this grade in her car.

This choice was prompted by the disappearance of Chevron Supreme from Wally's shelves and the 5qt jug of the Texaco/Chevron oil selling for ~$6.50. Glad to hear it's a good one.

BTW anyone noticed that the quarts of this oil at Wallys is "SM", while the 5qt jug remains "SL".

Still using Pennz 5w20 in the 2.3L Accord @142K.

I checked this morning and all the 5 qt. containers of Havoline at my Wal-Mart are now GF-4 SM.

I thought Havoline/Chevron had the reputation of shearing more than others (especially 5w30).

Someone please correct me.

Mike...noticed the same thing here in Michigan. It might be another month or two before the SM juggies show up here.

FWIW,
I just returned from a Fred's store in Huntsville, Al. They have dino Havoline 10w30 & 10w40 for $.99/qt.

I forgot to mention that Fred's also has Havoline (made by Purolator) oil filters for $1.99 ea. everyday price.

if you wait at the right time, usually during the winter, you can get havoline for 0.59/qt at rite aid after rebate

I think the jury is still out..but all dino's will shear (probably) to meet milage requirements. But with the does of moly, boron, and whatever else..It doesn't seem to be much of a problem. We'll see in the coming months.

don't mean to water down your experience, but there are lots of stories out there about people losing coolant and oil and still driving their cars without major damage. I'm really not sure whether that is a testimonial to the fluids or to the engine design/metallurgy etc..., but hey if you think your engine was saved due to Havoline then that is great. I think it is a pretty decent oil, whether or not it can save everyone's cars in extreme conditions is hard to say.

A person i work with told me that his 1997 Kia Sportage w/ 110,000 miles on it always had Havoline 10w30 in it... they always jam pack the Kia with the Kids and luggage plus heavy Trailer. and it runs brand new still.

My next oil is probably be Havoline.. maybe

I made 15 miles with Castrol black death in my 79 fiat. blew a radiator hose. Of course, my saving grace was the fact that it was one of those 25 below zero Pennsylvania winter days. Car ran about another 100k miles after that till I got rid of it. Only ever had to change the head gasket on it. ...but I digress...I have no doubt that your havoline didn't hurt. Pretty good stuff IMHO.
