I'm having second thoughts about my switch from synthetic to dino in our two cars. My reasoning was cost. If I'm going to run 5K OCI is a cheap synthetic better than a good quality dino?

If I stick with the switch to dino I'll be using Chevron Supreme. What do you all think of Supertech synthetic from Wal-mart,vs. Chevron Supreme?

I could find only 4 used oil analysis reports on Super Tech synthetic oil. In general it did a pretty good job but the additive package was considered weak by several reviewers.

Given that the cost of Super Tech is maybe 2 or 2.5 times the cost of a good conventional oil the economics would suggest that it is not a "great value" in your case with 5,000 mile oil changes.

Depends on your budget, quality of car and length of ownership. Yes, a 'cheap' synthetic will be better at 5k OCI's than a conventional (assuming engine is in good running condition, etc.)

Chevron Supreme has produced some excellent used oil analysis that are posted at this site. If you feel better using a synthetic, there is no harm in doing so, but not necessary with dino's like Supreme on the market.

All dino's thin out rather quickly. At 3000 miles most 10w30 are closer to 10w-20. I don't believe you get the cleaning in a dino you get with synthetic. Best to stick to 3000 mile changes with dino or go to 6000 mile changes with synthetic. Cost seems to be about the same for both. Synthetic is still the best choice I believe.

You can do easily 5,000 mile OCI`s with the HDDO`s from Chevron or any other Manufacture, and probably as much as 7,500 if mostly highway miles.

Depends. What's your application. Mix Highway and in town.

I think Chevron is a good choice. So are the Delo's including shell and delvac.

Me, I'm partial to the DELO's... however right now is the first time in 800K-1million of miles I am using a gasoline oil.

Bottom line... Don't cut corners. Get a Quality value dino product and go 4-5k maybe more. Pull a sample after the second run, then the third one to form a trend...

If you wanna stick with Syn only... Then TRY DELVAC1 if not already. There are many others out there too. But IMO the Dino's still have too much to offer, unless you have a specific application you need SYN.

Cheers!

So much nonsense about cheap conventional oil not being able to last 5,000 miles. With the exception of a handful of Toyota and other "sludgemonster" engines, I've never seen any proof backing this claim. In fact, the few used oil analysis for 4,500-7,000 mi intervals on this board look surprisingly good, with iron wear under 25 ppm (often well under that). Lately I've been using the cheapest "SL" oil I could find -- Citgo for 36 cents/qt after promotions -- for 5,000 mi intervals. Still not a speck of sludge or varnish on the valvetrain -- looks like it was assembled yesterday.

Here here there there me too.
But also one step further.

What other specifications have evolved past that by engine makers with their own specific requirements. Hope I said that right.

In other words, WHAT OEM are calling for better or tougher standards? What are the opposing or added limits... I.E. 20 v 12
