Saw some one ar Walmart picking out fram oil filter and immediately recommend them at least the puralator classic ? And even help them pick out the right part number ? ...... I did twice today while waiting for them to test my 2 year old Walmart battery.

Honestly no.. And it's because their car will be fine with that filter.

Would I use one given another choice? no, but your engine will not grenade because you used an OCOD.

Yes actually i have done that before, between the Fram and Purolator.

I also have steered someone into a 0w-20 instead of a 5w-20. They told me it was thin like water, and i tried to explain a few things lol

I usually tell them bar and chain oil is fine - Its really M1 that was slightly misformulated. Gotta help Darwin since the PaterLundt is hindering nat-select

I usually mind my own business. Although the other day I heard a guy telling his buddy that "not all M1 is synthetic". Before I said anything he looked at all of the grades and figured it out himself that he was wrong.

Once I was at WM and a guy was looking for the Fram Filter he needed. His wife/girlfriend pointed at the Purolators and said "Why don't you get one of these, they're cheaper". He then said "Because Fram is the best".

Most of the M1 grades are not synthetic.

This is why I specifically do not offer unsolicited advice (not to call either one of you out). Well-intentioned people can and will disagree on things, and in most cases (especially a topic as subjective as filters), the best choice is the one that makes the purchaser happy. Not all filters are the same, they're constructed differently, they're priced differently, they filter differently. Each one of us has reasons for why we buy the things we do. Some of us are more comfortable with some brands vs. others; some of us are more comfortable either with OEM or with aftermarket parts. Some of us don't care about any of that, and do a cost/mile analysis on everything purchased. And all of that is okay.

To be sure, if someone at Walmart asked me my opinion on filters and asked me which one I'd buy, I'd tell them. But I'm sure they would appreciate my unsolicited opinion about as much as I would appreciate theirs.

I once helped a girl get oil for her car. I was getting oil for my jeep and noticed she was looking at a lot of the different bottles and reading the back. I asked her if I could be any help and she told me her car and I got her the right oil and filter.

I have before and have been tempted since. This is one of those life lessons that have made me the more pensive fellow I am today. I now avoid offering unsolicited advice because it too often opens the door to an ideological battle-royal either between the people I intended to help or someone else who also wants to help them and disagrees with my perspective.

No, I mind my business unless I am asked or clearly the person is lost and needs help. What others do with their cars is none of my business.

BINGO! A huge difference exists between asking if you can help and just barging in with advice where none was requested.

I leave most people to their own thoughts/devices. Sometimes I will help an elderly or infirm person with an obvious need, but I always ASK first.

Well said Steve. That is basically what I meant with my response.

Nope-I don't patronize Wal-Mart, but if I did I wouldn't stick my nose in someone else's business.

I often strike up conversations with other people in stores, but I most certainly don't tell them what to purchase (unless my advice was requested).

I had a girl in Walmart come up to me and ask me to pick out the oil and filter for her car. I showed her how to look up the filter in the catalog, grabbed one for her (was either a Motorcraft or AC Delco) and then got her a 5 quart jug of either GTX or Valvoline (can't remember which one). She thanked me and went on her way

It is funny; just couple of days ago I was in Walmart and was near the Turtle Wax ICE section and a guy started asking me about it. I had put Meguiars Quick Wax in my cart and told him about my prior experience with the ICE (good one and definitely cuts down on the dirty car syndrome but I wanted more bling). As it turns out, he already had used Meguairs in the past and wanted to try the ICE. I wish we could have just swapped our used bottles rather that buying from Walmart :-)

Exactly.

Not that I would, but if I sent my wife to the store for an oil filter or oil,and she came back with something else based on some yahoos recommendation,I'd be irritated.
