Hey all.

So I have a dilemma on my hands. I met this person about 1.5 years ago and we became good friends, but lately I've felt a bit irrelevant to him. Specifically this semester I've found that when we do anything together it's rarely him who initiates it. And when we do hang out it's usually with three or four of his other friends. And when that happens it's because I ask him if he wants to do something and then find out he's already doing something with his other friends and then I get invited.

And when I ask if he wants to do something when it's the two of us it almost always ends up with him inviting his roommates (2 females he's known since high school). It's not that I have a problem that he invites them but it's rarely the other way around.

I really thought I had a genuine friend. I think I still might, but when I hang with him and his friends I feel more like a third wheel imposing then actually being part of the group. They're not mean or anything. I just don't really feel like I fit in. My friend is actually a really nice person, which is why I'm concerned that he keeps me around because he would feel bad. We used to hang out regularly every weekend. Then his two roommates started to be around more often and then one of his best high school friends moved closer to school.

I'm a shy person so I'm usually quiet and I'm quite picky about who I count as a friend and how quickly I trust them. And this guy, I trusted almost instantaneously. He's actually one of the few people I trusted enough to come out to, and he took it well and helped how I approached the friendship because I had nothing to hide. Right now I'm wondering if that friendship has gone past its prime or if it's my own insecurities creeping in.

There are a lot of people who are more mature than I am, so I was hoping for advice. But if I don't get any then that's fine too because it helped a little writing this out even though I feel a little stupid. And thanks for reading to the end.

Sam

I think we all have different types of friends. We have friends who are there for us when we need them, but they are not friends who include us in their social activities. This does not mean they are not are good friends, but rather, we have different groups of friends for different purposes.

I wish i had more friends like that!
Holy smokes man what's the problem? You couldn't do better than this if you beat it with a stick unless of course these two are lets say a little less then glamorous.Even then nothing a 6 pack wont cure, relax and don't worry about this situation,it is what it is.Try making some other friends but i still think you should enjoy the company of these two female friends of his as much as possible.

Wanna trade places for a while?

I wouldn't take it personally...seriously, you both might find that you have things more in common in the future or at least he will be an acquaintance. Who know's what the future might bring, that's why we should stay positive and just take things as they occur.

...unless you are interested in more than just friendship with this guy. In that case I wouldnt' bother with him anymore.

I understand what you're saying...but you shouldn't try to "end" anything. He's not being a very good friend, so just let the distance that he put between you exist. I wonder if he's that good a friend if he's ignoring you....doesn't sound like it to me, but trust me, you go forcing the issue, it gets ugly.

Relax, you need to find a few other folks to hang with. Move on.

It generally doesn't pay to burn any bridges...

One is a little neurotic but kind of cute and I kind of feel bad for sometimes, and the other is bossy, insecure, and not so pretty. Still want them

I agree with Astro...if you had other friends, you probably won't feel this sensitive about this. And you find other friends when you least expect it...

I have become better at not depending too much on friendships as I grew older, and there are about 4-5 friendships that are so solid and old that i MIGHT be upset if they went wrong, but otherwise I try not to bee too sensitive about things...

Give your friend the bossy one and take off with the neurotic but kind of cute one!
I got news for ya,they are all neurotic.

BTW i have a few friends that i have known for many years, some i don't see more than once a year if that.
But i have a lot of friendly acquaintances, don't sweat it,really.

In our increasingly narcissistic society the line between friend and acquaintance is blurry at best.

See where they stand when you indicate you could use a little help in a time of need.

Unless you are always needy.

I've had to end frienships many times. I once dealt with a guy that was supposed to go 50/50 on hotel costs for a vacation. He could never pay the full amount. He then said "i'll pay you back" I lied to him about canceling the hotel. I gave him his money and then I stopped answering my phone and text messages. Total loser.

You can't force any kind of relationship to be something that it naturally is not. All you can ever do is be who you are, let other people be who they are, and if there is energy there, then good, if not, that is OK too.

Edit - I just re-read you message and spotted the "to come-out to" portion. Perhaps he is unsure what you want out of the relationship, and that is why he always has girls or others around?

People grow and people change. Chances are the friends you had a few years ago aren't the same as they are now. In a few years the friends you'll have will also be different.

I have ended a friendship. A long-standing one (several years) that I had thought was quite close. It took me until a couple of years after graduation to realize he was leeching off of everyone around him, including me. One day he made a BIG mistake that I will not discuss here and, when I refused to save him from trouble at my own expense for the umpteenth time, did a total about-face and started accusing me of ruining his life -- again, for no reason other than that I refused to stick my neck out to save him from himself. Can't have a clearer signal than that that it's time to abandon ship.

It sucked. But only for a little while. The worst part was the months of constantly asking myself how I could have been so generous with someone who turned out to be such a monster. Forgiving myself for that -- which was easy since most of our friendship had been in college, which is a pretty unique time -- was all I needed to move on.

As with all things, know yourself first and foremost. It's not obvious how that's relevant here, but trust me, it makes all the difference in the world.

To answer the topic, yes.

Usually, when you have time to reflect, you realize that person wasn't your friend to begin with.

I agree with this.

I find that I'm slowly drifting away from a good friend of mine. His ideals are not the same as mine and his agendas are different than mine as well. He is still my friend, but the interaction between us has dwindled.

Instead of worrying about it or over analyzing it, I just accept it for what it is and move on.

Dont burn any bridges. I have a lot of friends who are great to catch up with sometimes but for a variety of reasons, mainly geographic anymore, we dont talk. It takes two to tango, and I suppose I could pick up the phone/write the email/whatever, but so could they.

Does not mean we arent friends or care about each other its just that life throws a lot at people. Things just take a route.

You may well still have a good friend. Just dont make much of an effort and see where it goes. After say a month and a half or two months if nothing happens, you could always call back and say that youve been really busy... so it does not seem like youve been avoiding.

The other person may just be comfortable in the receiving position if you make plans and set things up.
