Have you been ripped-off by a rebate?

I've been ripped off by rebates so many times that I no longer consider them a valid discount. Even when I have my photocopied "proof" that everything was in order as sent, the amount of time I have to spend making them do right cancels out any monetary discount on the original product. Flat out not worth my time.

The only rebate I can think of that was a major problem was with Vonage. I fought them for a year or so until they really pi ssed me off. I canceled my service with them and haven't looked back.

I've had above 80% success on rebates. The best ones let you fill out all the info online. I have six "family" email addresses so I set one up as my "spam drop" and they keep me informed of rebate progress. Rite aid drugstores is good for this and I'm always getting automatic dish detergent for nearly free, etc.

I figure the point of rebates is to make sure every consumer plays fair with the "limit one per customer". Otherwise someone could keep walking between the car and store, buying them out of stock on the first day of the sale. If the item really is a "loss leader" at the final/rebate price this enforces that and saves the store from hemhorraging money.

I haven't done a motor oil rebate in a couple years. The exxon superflo ones always worked. The pep boys citgo $10 gas card worked. Usually my cheap oil comes from clearance sales.

I am waiting for the day rebate checks are stuffed in a junk mail envelope with preapproved credit card solicitations.

A large percentage of people, myself included, tear these things in two without opening them.

I hate mail in rebates, instant rebates are a ridiculous marketing scam, why not just lower the price and leave it at that? it's like those stores that do the "we pay the tax" sales, woo! you mean an 8.75% off sale right? tell it how it is.

I seem to get all my MIR's back, if I haven't then I don't know about it cause I have forgotten about it by the time 842 weeks of processing time allowed rolls by.

I have gotten ALL the rebates I've submitted so far...I submitted and got about 20 rebates last year: AAP,AZ, buy.com, Newegg, Linksys, other pc stuff, electronics etc

...I'm very careful with them, though, and I would try to "remind" them if the rebate submission takes too long to appear on the "check status" system, but I've only had to do it once.
currently waiting on a Patriot Memory/Newegg rebate; it shows it's being processed on the "check status" page, so I think I'm gonna get this one, too.
Being neat, keeping copies etc is the key, imo.
