It's been a while since I've browsed through the oil filter forum and I've viewed many threads with pics of Frams cut open. Is the general consensus that Fram quality has improved, as in pleat spacing, number of pleats, glue bonding, fiber end cap bonding/construction etc???
Has Fram quality improved recently?

There's always going to be less pleats on the extra guard because it's an entry level filter. Ultras in the spin on form are almost always perfection.
Running a Tough Guard right now, 99% efficient at 20 microns with a silicone anti-drain back valve. Rated for 10k miles and $6 at WM. Prob get the Ultra next time for $9 and run that sucker 20k miles.

They make the ultra and that is a very good filter in my opinion.. It does seem the other filters they make did improve a little also.. There are hundreds of pictures of oil filters on the internet... Look at them and decided for yourself like i did.

The only filter sold for my van at my wal-mart is Fram. Haven't had an oil related problem in 3 years of ownership.

The old 'orange can of death' legend has gone bye-bye.
Quality has, apparently, improved in the last few years.
They do make and even cheaper built filter for others though.
The higher level filters in the Fram line are all decent values.

Like i said the Ultra is a great filter.. Nothing else went bye bye..
When was there ever a problem with Fram quality?
Other than the hype written here and elsewhere, I don't think that there ever was one.
I write this as one who used Fram orange cans for years before coming here and hearing that Purolators were better filters for the same coin.
Later, we learned that Purolators had a strong tendency to have media failures of a kind not seen in Frams.
The reality is that Frams have always had quality at least equal to other brands of oil filters in the same price tiers.
Other than the hype written here and elsewhere, I don't think that there ever was one.

I saw that too. I think I'm going to start buying oil and filters in bulk instead of when needed. I can get the ultra for like 5 bucks a pop or something like that. It's like 13 bucks for the OEM Kawasaki filter, so I figure I can save enough money on the filter to make the cost of amsoil more reasonable.

I've used a number of the Fram Ultras and while I think they provide excellent filtration, I find the canister pretty thin on them. Despite a coating of oil on the gasket and clean surfaces, I always find them to be a pain to get off. (Yes, I hand tighten only) They always get mangled by the filter wrench. I don't have this problem with Motorcraft or Mobil 1 filters. I haven't seen anything that indicates that the quality or design of the rest of the Fram line has changed for better or worse.
