Has Fram quality improved recently?

I felt that way as well for many years because about 25 years ago I cut open many a filter brand (for my Toyota) and found the Fram filter to be junk. They has wimpy cardboard end-caps and a string (yes a string) tied around the middle to help keep it together!

But, many, many things have changed in all those years, including the build quality of the modern Fram filter (especially the TG and XG models). Thankfully, BITOG has helped me to see what the modern Fram (and other brands) filter is like and I am impressed.

The Tough Guards used to have a screen over the bypass valve for extra protection and now the screen is gone.

Other than for my Bimmer, I'm switching to the Fram Ultra on both of my other cars. Best bang for the buck and one of the best quality filters out there.

Other than the hype written here and elsewhere, I don't think that there ever was one.
I write this as one who used Fram orange cans for years before coming here and hearing that Purolators were better filters for the same coin.
Later, we learned that Purolators had a strong tendency to have media failures of a kind not seen in Frams.
The reality is that Frams have always had quality at least equal to other brands of oil filters in the same price tiers.
You obviously never read anything from the "Mini Mopar Oil Filter Study" site where cutting oil filters as an occupation began.

Back then I cut open a couple of Frams from my Mazda and was amused by that string. They didn't fail though, and I usually ran them ~18K miles. Purolators (and Purolator-made Kmarts) didn't either.

The Fram Ultra is superior to anything that you can buy at the store in person for most gas engines.


+1 ... guys that are blind and still think all Frams are junk are just fooling themselves. Maybe they should go for a Purolator - I mean Tearolator, instead.

I don't remember Fram having a string around them ...I do remember Purolater had a string.

Yep - if I hold the Mobil 1 M212 and the Fram XG10575 - the Mobil filter is a tank by comparison ...
I tend to stock up on M1 at sale time and run the XG's in the mix ...
Wix XP is my transmission filter - in that app - I'm good the single pass efficiency ...

A little trolling? I know the Ultra is a great filter, but from a user standpoint, neither you nor I would know if an Ultra were installed there or an empty can with an ADBV. All filters are transparent in their operation unless something is wrong.
