Has enthusiasm for electric cars waned?

Believe it or not there are these places where you pay a little money and charge them.

To be fair I don’t mind it for personal use, but if that was company supplied I might not be as thrilled to deal with it.
After an hr drive, 14hr flight and another 6hr drive I wasn't interested in playing games with a glorified Power Wheels

My speculation is GM will get out of the retail vehicle business in the next decade or so, and their business will be centered on government contracts.

No idea if GM will go bankrupt in my very wild speculation, but I don't see GM or ford being in the retail vehicle business over the long term. Just my two cents, and I have been wrong many times before
Hey, we all choose our business decisions on our own personal reasoning.
There are certainly plenty of stocks to invest in out there.

Me, I have a stake in the leading retailer of cars in the United States for 90 years selling at four times earnings call me crazy but I don’t see any long downside risk whatsoever.

By the way, this is not a multi year long-term investment, it is a very conservative investment for sure.
Within the next year, I could decide to get out at 10 or 30% Gain.

Not worth discussing since we both know our positions, but I don’t understand how on earth you could expect the largest seller/retailer/producer of automobiles in the United States. That still gains market share sales increases and profit margin increases to just go away during your lifetime.
That really is speculation and what I’m doing is factual

I would like it if I could use our EV battery to supply our house in the event of a blackout. Having said that, I cannot remember one in the past 20+ years, even though my neighborhood's infrastructure is old.
I would like to be able to use our EV battery to supply our house too. We have tall trees and windstorms in the fall and winter that occasionally take out the power. We had a big windstorm leading to a 36 hour power outage in our neighbourhood a few years ago. Frozen stuff gets warm in that amount of time.

We have a gasoline powered generator that we used to power up the freezer and refrigerator a few times during those 36 hours. One of the neighbours used it too. But it would be simpler to just plug into the Tesla.

I'm not worried about running the Tesla out of juice either because we could still drive the Honda (which sits most of the time). I suspect many EV owners have a second ICE vehicle.

Sears the world's largest retailer for over the past 100 years is gone today. Not so long ago Sears stock was flying high, yet the truth was Sears was a very sick stock, and their stock share price didn't reflect how sick the patient was. Lots of money was made in the Sears stock action for many people. But in the end, the company was in fact failing.

Maybe GM is a buy- I can't see a single sign that GM has a long-term future in retail vehicle sales. And I sense the same for Ford. For either company to be in the retail vehicle business long term will take an exceptional once in a generation leader as the CEO. Until then, both GM and Ford are toast long term in the retail vehicle industry. Maybe they both will just be defense contractors in the following decade.... who knows.

My rental two days ago was a 2023 Chevy Equinance with 1100 miles. The pluses were (1) it had a analong audio jack available, (2) it had nice and simple climate control knobs. The drivetrain was beyond brutal- totally unacceptable. It provided zero confidence when the engine stopped while waiting to make a turn, that it would start in time to safely complete the turn. I think a 1974 Chevy Vega drivetrain provided more confidence.

On a plus note- I think the Chevy heavy duty trucks are well built and their simple design is awesome for a guy like me. But heavy duty trucks are not enough to keep GM in the retail vehicle business through the next decade.

Standby power for the house, with transfer switch, and installation far enough above high tide, is in the $10,000+ range. I’ve priced this out.

I can get a cheaper gen set, but there is no point if I have to use extension cords to run the fridge, garage freezer and it lacks to capacity to run the heat pump and/or furnace. Mrs. Astro won’t use it when I’m not home. Worse, if it gets flooded by salt water because it was on the ground when high tide hit, I’ve lost the entire investment.

Maybe you should consider moving to Chicago. You can be near your employer's (current) HQ, not have to worry about many natural disasters, and get a good hot dog on the way home from work..... seems a lot easier than planning for a a hurricane.....

Here is a house that has been on the market a while- bet you can get a great deal on the home- very confident the home has a world class power backup system.

@Astro14 is moving here. Not sure if he and the family have experienced a quake yet...
Just had a 3.7 a few nights ago. Nuthin' to it.
You’re asking me to trade my house here, for one I can’t afford, there?

I dodge the hurricanes, but pick up wildfires, and earthquakes?

Not certain this is viable…unless…

Do I get to drive the Corvette? It would have to be, like, every day…

I cant believe it until he post that, he is way to smart for a move like that.

Sure. You get Earthquakes. The fires are up North. You can hate PG&E like me...

You can drive any one you like. A Highland Performance is likely in the future if you are in a hurry to get somewhere.
Bring @Trav with you. We'd love to have you.

There is a guy up the street with a '66 small block Coupe, pretty original. He just had it painted for $56K. Silver paint like glass. Crazy.
The guy across the street drives this incredible MBZ 2 seater. I have no idea what it is, but the sound is incredible.

The '68 sounds pretty good as well. Hedman coated headers and turbos out the back... I think it needs those bubble tail lights they used to make...

My friend's incredible i8 has engine sounds that you can play through the radio. Not sure why? This car is flat out sexy; even EV hybrid haters love it. I had to show them how to open the clam shell hood to check the coolant.
This BMW ain't no garage queen; Debbie drives it. Close to 40K on the clock. She told me I could take it anytime so Sue and I could take it down the Coast Highway. I don't think so...

Maybe not, when we had the big outage the gas stations could not pump gas and I had a gas generator at that time. I had to drive about 10 miles to a gas station in another town and fill 5 gal cans. If that would have been an EV I would have been worse than screwed once the battery went empty.
The car would have already been charged in my garage though to at least 80% because I leave it plugged in. If you treat it like gasoline and run it low you might have a point. Most EV drivers don’t do that.
