Has Anyone Grown Ornamental Grass From Seed ?

Back in the Fall when the Ornamental Grass went to seed I grabbed some at different locations around here and planted them in some small pots . I kept the dirt moist and set them on the heat register . I got them to germinate about 3/8" but then soon died . What am I doing wrong ?

I am about to try this next month. Putting it between the sidewalk and the curb. As soon a the rain is over tomorrow I am going to kill the weeds in that area, then make 3 or 4 clusters of seeds in that area. The seeds I use grow some vigorous ornamental grass that only get about 1.5 ft tall. I think mine do better in the ground, like I said they are healthy growers.
