BRUSSELS, Belgium (Feb. 21, 2012) — Bridgestone Corp. has signed a long-term lease on a Swedish automotive proving ground that will provide the company exclusive use of the facility, just 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle, up to 17 weeks a year throughout the winter season.

The Vidsel facility has the space and equipment to conduct both subjective and quantitative objective testing, providing Bridgestone engineers with data-driven analysis for tire development, Bridgestone said.

The facility includes two snow handling circuits and flat snow tracks of 0.85 mile and one-third mile, a high-speed track, an ice-handling circuit, a snow and ice circle and a hill track—all suitable for testing ice and snow performance of passenger car, van, truck and bus tires.

In addition, the circuits are equipped with sensors to monitor air and surface temperatures and conditions and relay the information on-screen to offices on the site. Five snow canons and a water supply system produce artificial snow if required.
