I stumbled across an interesting thread in a VW forum in which two different VW owners reported they were able to reverse their oil consumption problems by simply using a retail crankcase petro-solvent such as MMO. If you read through various message boards, some VW/Audi owners can go through a quart of oil in as little as 1,000 - 1,500 miles, with some people exasperated enough to mention, "Wish I had never bought the darn car!" The problem has bedeviled more than a few VWAudi owners. On the other hand, my 2008 Passat uses very little oil, so the problem appears to exist on a car-by-car basis. Should gummed up piston rings contribute to this problem -- just one possibility -- I could see how a simple solvent might clean them up enough to reverse the problem, at least for a time.

He actually put it in fuel and not oil.

Gee, when I was battling the issue in corolla, I didn't think MMO as gas additive would do the trick.

Someone with oil burner wants to try?

Dont see how thats possible, would be combusted before it could work. In the crank, its possible the oil burning would allow the oil/mmo brew to get on the rings in enough volume to do something.

OK, I'm a dork. Somewhere along the line I was mistakenly under the impression he put it MMO the crankcase (he didn't). Another guy on the same thread mentioned he used it and had the same results (reduced oil consumption), but he didn't say whether he used the MMO in the gas tank or sump.

Racing around increases consumption a lot, vs. 'normal' driving.
Enthusiasts often hit redline and accelerate hard otherwise.
That's great - it's why they bought their car - have fun.
But over time wear is increased, and oil control can go out of control in a non linear way once certain RPM are met. Rings get all flustered.
Also see about your PCV system. German cars can be weird. Improvements can be made to relieve pressure better. This can help rings seal better.
