H6 Battery comparison and complaint

Comparison:
My car takes an H6 or H8 battery. There are two holes for the battery hold down hardware.
An H8 is 25% - 30% larger than an H6.
All 4 batteries mentioned here have 36/60 warranties
An H6 as well as an H8 cost $120 at Walmart.
An H6 as well as an H8 cost $159 at AutoZone.
Oddly enough, the "H" stands for handle. I believe the batteries themselves are a standard size.

I'd buy at Walmart.


Complaint:
Since batteries have group sizes, why do retailers have their own codes for sizing? 1C or 2F etc.
Are consumers that lame?
Why not just use the group size? Add an "equivalent footprint" chart if need be.


I'm not yelling at clouds. It just seems silly to make up multiple nomenclature for the same thing.

FYI, H8 is DIN size - the new nomenclature that was adopted a few years back. It corresponds to old group 49. These are the only two different naming conventions that I'm aware of. Is this what you're talking about?

I believe these battery sizes are unique and don't cross-over to the old-fashioned "group size" (24, 35, 78, etc). My wife's Fusion can use an "H6" battery. Just checked the manual and I might be mistaken based on the number it shows. They refer to it as "48H6". I haven't compared the dimensions to see if that matches with a "group 48" battery. It also fits a "90T5".

It looks like there are more Group Sizes than appear on that chart.


Part of my grousing is K-Mart's "1C and 2F" as well as Costco's. Seems superfluous

That chart only shows the 'equivalent' Group sizes with DIN sizes. It's definitely not meant to be an all-inclusive list of battery group sizes.

Yes, that's just an excerpt of some common batteries used in BMW cars.

No, I just saw the sizing system on the store shelves in both cases.

I think you are exactly right about that... It sounds stupid to me too... Just use the established bci numeric system.
