What is the difference between a Group II and a Group II+ base oil? I see Group II and Group III listed in publications, etc, but I have never heard of II+ until I started reading this forum.

What is this stuff, and what makes it different / better that Group II. Please clarify for a "newbie".

Thanks.

Group II+ isn't an official designation, but is used in the industry to indicate a Group II base oil that is on the high end of the VI range for a Group II, generally 117 to 119. Group III is 120 and up.

A Group II+ is generally what's used to produce a conventional 5w30 that meets the GF-3 specs.
