Yeah that's a good reason to avoid a product.

It's not whale oil. It's beef tallow. You know what beef tallow is? That's fat. Fatty acids. From Wikipedia...

The composition of the fatty acids is typically as follows:

Saturated fatty acids:
Palmitic acid: 26 %
Stearic acid: 14 %
Myristic acid: 3 %

Monounsaturated fatty acids:
Oleic acid: 47 %
Palmitoleic acid: 3 %

Polyunsaturated fatty acids:
Linoleic acid: 3 %
Linolenic acid: 1 %

And then they turn that mixture (which is solid at room temperature and oxidizes quickly) into a motor oil. It makes a great lubricant. They use it in shaving gels and to lubricate sheet metal as it is being made.

But to clarify, it is not whale oil, it is cow oil. Mooooooo!

Let's consider this as well...

Just for a second, let's assume this oil is the evolution of motor oil and is equal to a group II Dino oil for protection and longevity.

With that being said, let's also focus on what Shell, BP, and Exxon Mobil are in the business of, Crude oil.

These guys have oil rigs and derricks, NOT pastures of cows.

So, even if the Green oil was better for the earth, and since the big 3 don't own cows, do you still think they would formulate it? Nope, they want to sell Crude, not FAT! They have way too much money invested into crude drilling and pumping stations.

My Home Depot doesn't carry their motor oil, but they do carry a grill & surface cleaner made by GET. I picked up a bottle yesterday to try out, and it works great! It really made cleaning the dried-on fat and food gunk very easy. It appears to be a very good product.

On the flip side, my local Kroger's used to carry GET auto care products in their automotive section. Granted, Kroger's isn't known for guiding the automotive market, but they did soon have all the GET products on clearance, and now don't carry anything by them.

How does this all pertain to their motor oil? I don't know. To me, it says that GET does make decent products, but it is going to be difficult for people to get on board, as evidenced by some of the comments posted here.

This kind of reminds me of E-85. It was going to be so great and refineries were built here in the Midwest. There is one 20 miles away from me that NEVER OPENED! There was a corn shortage which equaled a food shortage so prices went up. Farmers are not oil barons.

Dyson's homepage references some testing he did on this stuff. It's on the blog, and I don't have a subscription, so I don't know what was determined. I'd be interested to know the results.

Seriously, not buying something because it's "green" is just as stupid as buying something because it's "green". Either way you're letting your choices be defined by the green movement.

If it's a good product at a good price, buy it. Else, don't. Now, your average "green" product will usually be more expensive at usually no real benefit. Don't buy it for that reason, not because it says it's green.

In this case the oil is donuted but not Starbursted. At $7 a quart, it's a horrible buy, unless you need to dump used oil on your lawn or something. Don't buy it.

Also if the stuff is biodegradable (60% in 28 days), it's a bad idea to leave around in the sump of a non-driven car. You'll have a rotting sump

I'll take it! I like the way "Scorched Earth Technologies" sorta rolls off your tongue. Now, where do I find the stuff?

Pretty much everywhere IIRC.

Funnily enough, the current lead player sort of has a green/yellow flower as its logo/symbol.
