What are some great engines that either:

1. Are known to last forerver with easy maintenance? and/or
2. Have consistently great UOAs with low wear?

I think the Toyota/Lexus UZ V8 family qualifies. Others?

any 4 cyl. honda... easy maintenance and cheap parts.

International Harvester SV. 304, 345, 392. These were designed for medium duty trucks. It's not uncommon to find original running IH SV's for a Scout. Good luck finding body parts.
Dodge Slant 6.
Ford 300 6.

Mercedes OM 616/617 diesels are longevity champs that can't be beat. They are still in widespread service 30+ years later, the world over.

Toyota 2.4L 4cyl engines also come to mind.

Personally I know ill get [censored] for this but the dohc 1.9 saturn easy to work on, and will run forever . They do tend to drink oil but if thats the worst thing a car does thats not bad. Mine has 214, 000 still cranks out 200psi of compression and gets 35mpg good little engine not super high tech but to me that is a good thing.

Wish I could have a 617 in my Cherokee

The old 283 chevy engine. You could work on the carbs, do a tune up , find the plugs, put on a fan belt and still have all day to play.....................I remember the days when you could get to the engine and see the ground underneath it. wow ,,Im old.

you forgot the Ford 6.9 liter diesel my buddy had 1 of those that literally had over 800, 000 miles on it when the odo broke they had it for 2 more years and the engine never quit the transmission locked up and it was the old 4sp manual. That truck was rode hard hung up wet and that 6.9 never quit. It did require a spray of starting fluid on a cold morning.

I kinda liked it mostly because I was waiting for a day where it would be silent and never make a rumble again. It always smelled like french fries because he ran veggie fuel. It was like following a mickey D's on wheels.

My friend once described the sound of my 1992 F-350 idling as "the AFLAC duck on fast-forward".

That Pete of yours is gorgeous

One of my favourite truck styles. If I were to ever own a tractor, it'd be a long-nose Pete day cab with a 600 CAT in it. Not that it would be practical, or even useful in my lifestyle, but that's my favourite style of truck. Flat black, blacked-out with just a touch of chrome (tanks) and flat-black 8" slash-cut stacks
