I'm in the midst of a R&R of a older Honda Snowblower...
GX160 engine.

Just started removing the cover etc.....
Aside from oil, should I be greasing any areas forlubrication or to mitigate rust ?

On the shaft, some good quality metal (Rustoleum/Tremclad)paint would be better than grease to prevent rust. I'd probably paint the flywheel as well and put lubricant on the starter gear.

I have the same engine on a pressure washer. I had a hard time getting the pump off the engine because of rust. I notice that the new pump is greased internally. I was thinking of putting more grease on the shaft. If I painted mine I don't know if it will get back on......

I'd treat it with a rust remover until the steel takes on that "gray" color indicating a phosphate coating.

Then slather it with a non-acidic silicon grease.

If you paint it not only will you have a hard time putting it back on but the removal... I learned my lesson.

I would avoid grease because its hard to apply (no zerk) and will collect dust. If you feel you must lube it, I would use a dry lubricant such as a spray on graphite.

I would look into a service manual if your unsure of what to do. Personally I do not know if paint is a good idea. But adding a quality grease that Honda sells is a decent idea. Look into their high temp urea grease. It is a grease they use for their car clutch components. I think a small size of 4 oz or so is $10-15.

After reading the responses....and assuming that's it's 10-12 year old vintage, the patina is already set in.......

Amazingly, she's rustfree so there is TLC going on regardless but I guess I'll leave what's *under the cover* alone just short of a new plug and drive belt..

Unless I'm missing something here, picture #1 being the shaft end of a belt pulley, I wouldn't worry about that the least bit. Looks like a casting or machined steel. If I were removing the pulley from the engine shaft, I'd apply some never-seize prior to re-installing the pulley, that's about it.

Picture #2, the flywheel? It's rare to see one w/out surface rust. What model Honda snowthrower is this? Any pics?

Joel -

I've been on the hunt and the hunt has gotten to me....
I'm currently have/plans for 2 full blown RR of a HS621 (GX engine) vs the (GC engine) for single stage application....

Nice! AFAIK, those 621's are the best single stage units money can buy. Great find.
