I need a grease gun to grease my riding mower. I have used a couple of different mini grease guns and it seems the piston is to small for the cartridge and grease goes past wasting much of the grease and quite honestly sometimes no grease comes out as it all goes past the piston. What am I doing wrong? Steer me to a good grease gun. I am even willing to go back to the old fashioned ones which I sadly threw out when new cars didn't have grease fittings.

The macnaught is terrible. I bought it from all the posts here and on garagejournal about it being Australian made. The follower plunger is so much smaller than the diameter of the grease tube that you will have grease slipping by the plunger and making a mess. The solution was to screw the macnaught pump body on a cheap HyperTough grease tube with a tried and true follower design.
Their locking grease coupler is also really bad and a flawed design. But that’s well documented.

Not my experience at all. It works fine - no “slippage”. I also let it sit for months at a time - but I pull the plunger out as you should.
Their locking coupler was simply too big to get into the couple of fittings on my forward driveshaft, so, I went back to the original coupler. The locking coupler worked fine on everything else.
I have good luck with Lincoln grease guns.
I have had the Macnaught for some years now and couldn't he happier with it, very well made and high quality, all parts are available with a phone call. The standard coupling is adjustable, turning it anticlockwise will lock it onto the zerk and clockwise to make it easy on/off.
I pitched the small grease gun @raaizin mentioned because I got tired of the little tubes and the leaking mess.

This is my take.
Manual grease guns suck. Over the years, I have had several different brands, from low to high quality, and sooner or later, there is an issue. Whether it be air in the gun or tube, leaking, whatever. I used to cuss up and down when I would be starting off my day using my excavator (which I greased everytime I used it), and I would have a gun malfunction.
Long story short, my wife got tired of hearing me complain (in very nice words), and bought me a battery powered grease gun. To fit my existing tool set, Milwaukee.
Since then I have had 0.00% cussing episodes, and 100% reliablity. They are self priming, and you can grease things very easily.
I am not necessarily saying get a Milwaukee grease gun, but the chances are, the power tool maker you have has a grease gun.
Buy it and you will not be dissatisfied.
I whole heartedly agree with the battery grease guns. I’m very happy with the DeWalt, due to having many other DeWalt tools and batteries.
I know a guy who swears by his Dewalt. They all make good stuff.
