friend of mine has a 1999 year model Gravely ZTR mower, with a 25 hp kawasaki. i changed the oil today with a Kawasaki filter and some 15W40 rotella he had lying around. is this too thick for this engine? runs great.

That should be just fine. Most of the Kawasaki V-twin manuals I have seen list SAE 40 as an acceptable viscosity above 50 degrees or so.

That's exactly what I use in ever piece of lawn and garden equipment, including my John Deere 757 with a 25 HP Kawasaki engine. Never a single problem.

I substituted 15w40 for SAE30 in my small air-cooled engines years ago.

It will be especially good for hot Louisiana summers.

I found that Rotella 15w40 was a little thick for a 17hp Kawasaki in the wintertime.

I now run 10w30 Rotella in all of my L&G equipment just fine.
