My dad replaced his worn out 11 year old Dixon ZTR with a new Scag Liberty 36 inch cut, with an 18 hp Kawasaki engine. The place we deal with offers a military discount, so he got a pretty nice ZTR for a great price. He's 74, so hopefully with good maintenance it lasts the rest of his life. I'll be doing all the maintenance, the manual lists all kinds of oils, from SAE 30, SAE 40 to 10W30, 10W40 and 20W50. I plan on changing the oil and filter at 8 hours as recommended, then every 50 after that. I bought two quarts of Kawasaki 20W50 and an OEM filter, but my question is, should I use some Rotella t6 15W40 syn, or some Motorcraft high zinc 15W40, or stick to a quality 20W50 in this engine? the oil at the dealer is cheap, $5.xx a quart. Whatever is best, I will not use below a 40 grade, and always an oem filter.

Amsoil Small Emgine Oil ASF 10W40 would be my choice it’s a awfully stout oil.

I run Mobil1 Euro 0-40 in my ZTR with a motorcraft FL400S filter but I think your Kawi motor would take the fram filter (I can't remember the number)

If your mowing temperatures are above 90 F, I'd go with Kaw. 20W50. If your mowing is below 90 F,
I'd use Kaw. 10W40 or CK4 15W40. In my ZTR I use Mobil 1 15W50.
