I used to change my air filters every 3,000 miles, until I installed an air filter life monitor on my vehicles. It's not only cost effective, but rather convenient I must say.
After work today, I pulled up at a service station to refuel my Grand Marquis, and decided to check/adjust hot tire pressures whilst I was at it. I also had some windshield wash concentrate, and thought I might as well top that up too.
As I was checking and adjusting tire pressures, a station attendant came up to me and offered to help. I'm quite obsessive when it comes to who does what to my cars, so I simply gave him a rather decent tip, and thanked him for his offer. Then he proceeded to shove me out the way and started pumping up my tires, as a display of 'appreciation'. Thought might as well let him get on with it, and tell him what the pressures should be for the front (different than rear).
Whilst he was getting along with that, I popped open the hood to top up washer fluid and by that time the guy was done with the tires. He offered to check my oil, and I strictly refused. Tire pressures, alright...checking oil, no thank you.
As I went to get the washer concentrate from the trunk organiser, I got held up by the jack that moved out of place, and did a bit of reorganising. As I was sorting that out, the attendant had taken my air filter out of the housing and started blowing it with compressed air. I never clean my filters, I replace them. This ticked me off, because of the filter life monitor no longer being accurate. So I proceeded to slam the trunk lid and get him to stop. I was going to push the car into the parking spot right next to me, and asked my father to bring me a new air filter before I would start the car.
Unfortunately, he also blew compressed air inside the air box itself, and I think all that dust went through my MAF sensor. I replaced the filter, but the engine idle is very rough now. I bought some Liqui-Moly MAF cleaner and cleaned up the MAF, but it hasn't changed anything. There is no check engine light or anything of the sort. If I pull the MAF connector, idle speed rises and the engine idles better. Any ideas as to what I should do? I think I'm going to have to replace the MAF.
