A local Indie mechanic and body shop is selling small amounts of this motor oil. It’s made in India. I should checked the price. Next time.

Does it have the API donut on the back?

I check API Licensing search function and GP Lubricants has like 33 active licenses with them but I am not seeing anything under the Petrogen brand for API SN and 5W-20 or anything on their website either.

Might be some third shift bottling and dumped on the secondary channel market. I would not trust it.

It does seem kind of weird to roll a dice on random oils with questionable certs when you can make the most brain dead decision on earth and just go grab a bottle of super tech from Walmart for $18 and never have to think twice about whether it's actually licensed and actually meets the spec.

I just noticed there are two QR codes on the back of the bottle. If you have a QR reader on your phone take a “ photo “ of the top one. The API donut is there. Something new from our European friends.

@SubieRubyRoo that’s an excellent question. Based on my knowledge, it would likely be challenging to formulate an oil that meets dexos requirements without also meeting API specifications. All the additive packages I’ve encountered that comply with dexos standards have also met an API specification with the same treat rate. The only scenario in which this might occur is if GM permits the use of a base oil, co-additive, or viscosity index improver (VII) that is not explicitly approved by the API.

Moral of this post is if I don’t see a starburst on package: I ain’t risking it. No euronapprovals and somehow has DEXOS sticker on front. It may be decently priced but engines aren’t cheap
