Look what I found on my $350 volvo with 278k miles:

Let's repurpose an oil filter vise grips as a tensioner compressor:

OK now for the back-story, I put a water pump in and had to monkey with it to stop a leak. Car has a dum-dum design where a cylinder head casting meets the water pump and the seal there is rarely perfect or durable. Volvo put one water pump fastener behind the upper timing belt cover; said cover has a spacer that on my car got loose

during multiple on-off events and started shredding the belt to bits when I started the car. When I pulled the crank pulley the little bugger fell out all smashed up and flattened.

PS as timing belt jobs go this was pretty easy; most time was spent dealing with jack-screws on the multiple v-belt accessories. Serpentine systems rock!

Looks like oil on the timing belt. Don't forget to replace the cam and crank seals or whetever is causing oil to leak onto the belt.

The "oil" is old antifreeze from the bad water pump seal and/or me manhandling the bad belt with greasy gloves.

Wow, glad you had an opportunity to get that sorted before it turned ugly.
