Got the Olds Alero yesterday.

Had a few threads about this car which was just recently given to me -- just thought I would share a couple of pics. The car was absolutely filthy. I am positive it hasn't been washed in over 5 years. I only had time to do a wash at one of those do-it-yourself power car washes. It took a long time, but for the first wash it came out pretty good. Dirt was caked on, it really needed to use that power washer!

Anyway, just a few pics so you can see. I plan on keeping this one for a while.

Eh, not too great. Well it's in good condition but GM's interiors were so lacking in general. It's a base model Alero, (power locks, but crank windows which I like!)so it has basic cloth seats. The dash is rippling in a spot which seems to be somewhat common from what I read. This car baked in the sun and was barely driven.

Interior's still dirty but let me snap a shot or 2.
 
my pontiac had the twin cam. decent little engine good mileage. Keep an eye on your water pump it will start leaking then get progressively worse.
 
Brings back memories. I had an 01 GX sedan (2.4 twincam). It was a good car. Thanks for the pics. You were lucky to get a "free" car with such low mileage.
 
It takes 13 hours or so to do the head gasket on that motor according to someone...

AKA the "quad 4"

Hopefully I won't have to pay someone for that job!
 
I own an "01 2.4L Alero" bought it new and it now has 70,000 miles on it and other than: Brakes,struts & Hubs I never had any problems with the car unlike the Alero with the junk 3.4L motor which is the engine with Lower Intake Manifold problems.The headgasket is not a problem with the 2.4L motor.
 
Absolutely nothing wrong with that interior that a good cleaning and a coat of protectant won't fix. If you keep treating the dash, it may 'soften' ennough to smooth out. Try a strong vinyl conditioner.

Good call, I'll see how it goes! The car only has a radio unit, no cassette or CD player. I found one on ebay, factory Cd, cassette, and radio -- right from a 2000 alero. $30 shipped. :)
 
Pick up a bottle of Auto-Rx for the engine and get the pan filter changed and fluid changed! As for fuel additive go to a local Toyota Dealership as for their small gray silver can of Geniune Toyota fuel injector cleaner pick up two can's of this stuff. Add one can to the tank right before you start pumping gas. Run that tank of gas down until you only have a 1/4 of a tank left then repeat! Toyota's little gray silver can of injector cleaner is the strongest stuff I know of to remove carbon deposits safely from injectors and the head area of seldom driven vechiles. It is more concentrated then over the counter stuff and it is safe. It is basicly Chevrons AMine based cleaning agents liscensed fromthem in a much more concentrated dosage. Anytime I am near my dealership which is about 60 miles from home I puick a can up to have around! The only stuff that is as good is Redline SI-1 but that can be hard to find as well.

The DOHC I4 suffered from oil related timimg chain and timing chain tensioner issues so it is important to clean this engine ASAP and keep it clean. Other then the timing chain and tensioner issues they where a good engine. This is why I would use Auto-Rx ASAP and after i did the clean and flush I would use nothing but synthetic of your choice PP,M1 what ever.....I think these engines preffered 10W30 over 5W30 if I remember right?
