Got my scan tool, found my problem, now what?

No, you did the right thing. The dealer would have done the same thing. Just drive for a while, the monitors will complete their tests in a few days of driving.

Thanks! For some odd reason I thought these tests were done within a few seconds. I went from 1993 to 2008 tech in one jump, so I have a lot of questions. The replies and patience are greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing since I cleared the code from memory that was a bad thing. Did I basically started the testing, etc all over again?

Yes, you started the testing over again. But it is NOT a bad thing - the system is designed to work that way. As long as you wait until the tests complete (a few days to a week) before going for your emissions inspection, everything will be fine.

Thanks ron917! I have until December, no worries on that. I'm asking questions to help better understand how this system works.

Generally speaking how many start cycles does it take to complete the "tests"? The vehicle in question is an 08 Jeep.

Any idea how many start stop cycles it takes for the testing to be completed? I only use the Jeep about 2-3 times a week for a 40 mile rt.

You should be able to find how many monitors are still incomplete. Since it is showing "Yellow", that means at least one is incomplete. If you navigate the menu and find something which says "IM Readiness" (or something like that), it will tell you which tests are still incomplete.

Don't even try to figure out what exactly makes a drive cycle. Every car is different and rarely manufacturer publishes the data. Just keep on driving as usual and check the scanner every day. You need to get your moneys worth on that scanner :-)

Once you get more familiar with the scanner, explore Mode 6 data (test results). Google Mode 6 Chrysler and see if you can get specific information related to your model. Often, that specifications can be found in the service manual.

Each test has limit, test results and if limit is min or max. Looking at those numbers, one can see if any test is being on the borderline.

I'm not sure of what you mean.
If the codes are cleared, an existing problem should immediately throw a new code.
If it is clear and good, the P1000 'not ready for emission testing' code can take a while to go away. Up to 50 start stops, but usually much less.

Thanks, my scanner the Equus 3160 has a green, yellow, and red light, along with giving the codes. My CEL is out, but I still have a yellow light. Yellow light means monitors have not completed running their diagnostic tests.

My question is how many times does the engine have to be started to complete these tests and get the yellow light to go off on the tester? I have no pending codes, fixed the P0456 issue and cleared codes. From your answer if could take up to 50 starts, which will take quite a while for me with the use my Jeep gets.

LOL will do. We live in a socitey where everything is point and click and instant results...........Sorry, I guess with some things we still have to wait. Thanks for the reply!

You have 3160. On the top of the screen it has I/M Monitor Status and bunch of icons underneath. Which ones are done and which ones are not done? I suspect the solid means done and blinking means incomplete. Most likely EGR and CAT are still showing incomplete. If the EVA is completed, you are scottfree!!

Do NOT start/stop the engine to pass the test. It does not work that way. You have to get the engine from cold to hot and have to drive the car before it is considered one trip.

P.S. Here is from the owners manual. If you think BITOG is fun, reading manuals is even more fun :-)

Monitor icons - Indicate which Monitors are supported by the vehicle under test, and whether or not the associated Monitor has run its diagnostic testing (Monitor status). When a Monitor icon is solid, it indicates that the associated Monitor has completed its diagnostic testing. When a Monitor icon is flashing, it indicates that the vehicle supports the associated Monitor, but the Monitor has not yet run its diagnostic testing.

I'll have to look at which are incomplete. I drove the Jeep about 10' out of the garage to wash it today, and 10' back. I will take it for a 40 mile trip tonight. IIRC EGR and CAT were two of the 4 icons, grayed out. I'm a little in a daze getting over a wicked cold. Washing it was not a smart thing for me to do today.
