Nitto Invo 225/45/18. I'm getting them mounted on my BBS CH wheels tommorow. This is my first time owning Nitto tires...the build quality seems quite good. Made in Japan...a good thing in my opinion.

I'm not quite sure why tire companies have to paint all over them....

They indicate to the tire mounter the desired shape of the finished product.

Uh Huh...and what about the bands painted on the tread around the tire?

I guess he's glad the painted "dots" aren't painted "ovals" then : )

And now for the serious answer...

The yellow dots indicate the light spot on the tire. As such, it is recommended that they be placed next to the valve stem to minimize any imbalance of the tire/wheel combination. This helps to keep balancing weights to a minimum.

The red dots indicate the high point of the tire. This would be matched to a low point on the rim, if it is so marked. This helps with radial force variation. This is important when mounting high-performance tires with stiff sidewalls.

As for the stripes on the tread, they are a means of identifying the tread rubber during the tire manufacturing process. Think of it as a sort of color and sequencing version of a bar-code.

Unfortunately, there isn't agreement among the tire manufacturers as to what the dots mean. It all depends on what the tire manufacturer decides.

Exception: When a car manufacturer tells the tire manufacturer how he wants his tires marked - then ALL tires in THAT assembly plant, regardless of tire manufacturer, will be marked the same exact way. Not only is there no commonality between vehicle manufacturers, but this also varies from assembly plant to assembly plant within the same vehicle manufacturer.

Even then, the only thing vehicle manufacturers specify is the marking of the uniformity radial 1st harmonic - usually the high spot, but there is one who specifies the low point. The vehicle manufacturer will also specify that the wheels be marked - usually by drilling the valve hole at the low mark - but that isn't universal as well.

Is there any harm in matching a replacement tire's marks up with the valve hole? No. It's possible both the tire and the wheel have been done in the same way - but it is also possible that neither of them is so indexed.

Yeah, I have never purchaced a brand new vehilce and had to take it back to the dealer to have the tires rebalanced. It's about as perfect of a balance as I have ever had/paid for. They were great for the first couple two/three years of ownership I would say!
Then I would either need rebalancing or new tires anyway.

I have never had or seen a tire istaller line up any dot with the valve stem. Most that I have asked, didn't know!

You are right about the performance...I got them mounted and I am totaly impressed. They stick to the road like glue and I can't get over how quiet they are. These Invo's replaced a $1000 set of Michelin's...there is no camparison as far as handling, smoothness and quietness.

I can see how some might not like the non-traditional tread pattern...that happends to be one of my favorite aspects of these tires.

I'd love to hear back from you after some time on the street.

Not a highly rated tire in my world. I sincerely hope they are different for you.

I'm not trying to be arguementative...but do some more reading online...the reviews are excellent (based on price point). I spent hours doing this. The snooty BMW guys love them. Again...they are not the best tires made, just a whole lot of tire for the money. I will be sure to post an update after some more miles. Right now they are putting my $1000 Michelin's to shame in every category except for tread wear..because I just got them, I can't compare that yet.

That's not hard to do. Michelins are over rated.

You just said the number one reason I do not use them. On both cars I purchased them for they were initially ok but faded fast as they wore. Extremely short tread life and frighteningly poor wet traction after just a few thousand miles.

Just my experience. As I said, I sincerely hope yours are better.

Sorry to hear about the trouble you had with them...what kind of cars did you have them on? Are you an aggressive driver?
