I was trying to make a left into a shopping center, i waited since there were some oncoming traffic. Unfortunately the car behind me kept going and hit my back bumper. I called the police since he didn't have insurance. Now i need to wait for him to call me back with his insurance information or call the cop at the scene today. How long should i wait untill i call the cop again? 24hrs?

On his driver info exchange form, he didn't have an insurance company listed...

Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thank You.

If he didn't have insurance and you have an official police report, file it with your insurance, you actually pay them for this type of coverage. They fight for you. This happened to my father one time as well. Our insurance took car of our vehicle and they took the necessary actions to recoupe their money from the person that hit my father. There is no penalty on your policy neither.

+1 Let your carrier fight it out. That's what you pay them for....

+2 As long as you have uninsured motorist insurance, this is how many of the big insurance companies work--your own insurance company repairs your car and then your insurance company settles with the other insurance company OR goes after the at fault person.

Call your insurance ASAP.

My wife got rear ended and person took off damaging her car and another in front she was pushed into.

Fortunately offending driver left plate # imprinted in rear bumper and my insurance traced him down and had their insurance pay. Doing this stuff on your own is never worth it IMHO. I pay my insurance $1000/year for two vehicles. They can do something for my money.

Year before my wife's same car was hit in parking. Driver uninsured did not want reported. My wife held out and wanted payment and every excuse came out. Called insurance company check issued that day since our $15 uninsured coverage took care of it.

+3. You have to let your own insurance know about any accidents regardless of who is at fault, and within 24-72 hours. Read your policy.

This preps them in case the tables turn and a game of he said she said breaks out.

Having been hit a couple times (not at fault), it's amusing to me the next day when I call *their* insurance and they have not yet heard of said accident from their own insured yet...

Hold out hope that the guy has insurance but just didn't have his card or know his policy #.

I have been calling the cop at the scene everyday for the police report & case #, he is either in a meeting or off duty...
