Got 5g, 2.4g slows

We recently added 5g, and we have two WiFi signals now. The 2.4g slowed down a lot for all the devices that can't use the 5g. Especially my PS4.

Red Dead Redemption just came out. I bought the new Call of Duty and still haven't played it yet.

People call me a camper. "Playing the objective" should not happen apparently.

We tried updating the router firmware, changing to google's DNS, and doing the Ickey Shuffle.

Is there something else? At this point, I may just get the PS4 Pro and a new laptop to use the 5g and just avoid the other one.

What router are you using? THe 2.4 shouldnt be slowed down by teh 5g, if anything running dual banded like that should help as it will reduce the load on the 2.4 band. Does your router support MIMO? Maybe its giving priority to the 5ghz? Do you have any data prioritization tools in the router setup?

I have the Nighthawk, 5G and 2.4G are active. Never a problem. Streaming devices and my desktop are connected to the 5G, iPhones, laptop, Alexa, Nest all on 2.4.

Do you have neighbors?

Do a scan, and see what networks are out there, and what channel sets they are using. Your new router could have changed the 2.4G channels that you were using previously, and the channel set you are using now has lots of traffic.

I use WifiInfoView to scan for networks in my area. Don't have to install it. Just run it.

I'm running 2.4 and 5 at the same time with 0 issues but I have the bands on assigned static channels after doing a channel survey. I found when it was hopping around (set to auto) it would cause connectivity issues at times. This could be what you are experiencing and just coincidental that it happened when you went 5Ghz.

Are Overkill stated more information would be helpful.

65 hour work weeks right now. Let me finally go find out a few things and get back. Don't hold your breath.

So yeah. I asked my bro to fix it. He tried to do this and that, and it really didn't help.

I think I'm a bit too fatigued to try myself.

Rumours say the PS5 should come out at the end of 2019 with all sorts of VR capabilities.

At this point, I think it is best to just abandon devices that cannot do 5G and get with the times. Even if I figured out what's causing the problem, apps, websites, and games will require a faster connection to run properly going forward.

Sony higher ups have basically said that they need new hardware and and the PS4 just isn't cutting it anymore.

I'm going to trade in my PS4 for the PS4 Pro or any iteration that can handle the 5G. I still haven't played the new COD even though I bought it a while ago.

The folks at Best Buy have no idea how to help. My googling of solutions yielded me more knowledge than talking to their folks who clearly don't know.

I wouldn't go buying all new devices because your router is acting weird. Did you add another 5Ghz access point or a who new router?

No and no. Now that I think about it, I don't want to spend a few hundred on a new PS4. I'm gonna figure this out.

Is the firmware up to date on this router? Also how old is the router? I find most consumer grade routers seem to have issues around the 5 year mark, not all of them but a good lot of them.

It is up to date. And it should be new given that the 5G just arrived.

I think certain interests benefit from forcing consumers to leave the 2.4G for good.

I ended up buying the PS4 Pro. They said I can come back to get the same price of any sales until January 12th.

Cash back rewards card makes the purchase a bit more pleasing.

I can sell the PS4 and use the cash for the PS Classic.

I remember watching a YouTuber named raging video games or something like that. He was reviewing consoles from the 1980's, something called a Jaguar or whatever else. At some point, one or more consoles would have additional attachments the engineers would add to extend the life of the console. He said it was symbolic how it looked like it was on life support. I just feel like trying to make the launch PS4 work makes it look like a version of that Jaguar.

The box came with Red Dead Redemption 2, and other games should still be crisper with the 4K capabilities of the console.

5G didn't "just arrive", it's been around since 2012. Subsequently, Stevie's question has merit as to the age of the firmware on the device and whether an update was checked for.

Given that 2.4 has significantly better range, I doubt we'll be seeing it go anywhere anytime soon. 5Ghz offers the advantage of higher throughput at the cost of range. 2.4Ghz offers the advantage of increased range at the cost of lower throughput. They are both a tradeoff in their own right. Typically, one blends their topology to capitalize on both technologies where possible.

When I was using a consumer grade router before moving to PFSense I bought the router in 2012 and it had 5G in it. I upgraded the firmware as I was setting it up because it was already out of date. There were 6 firmware updates between then and the time I stopped using it in 2017 (5 years later) to fix bugs.

If you have any firesticks or chrome casts, remove power from them when not in use. I've seen them kill wifi speeds. An wifi connected xbox that is on will too. If you have Sonos with a boost, make sure that they are on a different channel than your router.

Just arrived at my residence I should say. The router is new and firmware updated. Honestly, I've never actually seen the router; it's in a different part of the house I never go to.

I should give some background on why I can't really name the router brand or give other details people asked for.

A little too much family drama for me to go interact with the family member who deals with it. Long story.

I wanted to find a cheap way to keep the 2.4G PS4, but it just felt a lot easier (and less drama) to just put down some cash for the PS4 Pro and get it over with.

I feel bad giving up on the 2.4G, but I do appreciate the faster speed in the 5G.

I played COD, and it's just oh so smooth. I shoot a guy, and it actually registers on both ends instead of me seeing the replay screen of me getting shot and my gun not even firing.

And yes I do think 2.4 will be around. But for the next gen of devices, and all sorts of VR coming down the pipeline, 5G is just easier to work with.
