Goodbye ‘93 Tercel - Thanks for your service!

Old Toyotas were handsome. As simple and raucous as that Tercel would be, it was nicely proportioned and had good lines. Modern Toyota has gone from that to gaudy styling with fake openings and weird angles.
You are too kind. I love Camrys but they are just plain strange looking. I don't get it...

Dang!

You bought a 14 year old neglected Tercel in 2007 for $3k and then rebuilt the engine and trans?

Was it worth $3k in 07?

Nice.

Rented a 2001 in Costa Rica and took up roads that most CUVs would hesitate on. Worst car choice however it crossed river beds of 6”- rocks, running streams 4” deep and mud.
I was just there and saw a few of these 90's Tercels still going, especially up in the smaller mountain towns, 90's Nissan Sentra's too. Some were still being taken care of, and it was odd to see so many layers of paint on a car, getting thick enough to noticeably round some of the body line creases.

I remember looking at them at the dealers. Never had one but thought they were a good car for the money at the time. Hadn't thought of them in forever. Hard to think it was 1/3 century ago.

I think $3k was a decent price - nicer ones were going for more. I didn’t really have to rebuild it but I hadn’t done a rebuild for about 10 years and I wanted the challenge.

It was fun but also tough. I did it in February and it rained every day - I was outside but under a carport. The engine stand I rented was too big so didn’t fit the tiny 1.5L. I ended up just doing the actual rebuild work on the floor on some garbage bags. Having only done it once before, I never thought it would run. Even after I had put 50k on it I still expected it to blow up but I guess I did a good job.

Once I bought it and did the rebuild, I had quite a bit more into it than it was worth but the tables turned over the years and the costs for this were extremely low over the course of my ownership.
