Mazda 3 .

Best all around value, proven reliable, reasonable mpgs, and Mazda needs sales in the US. You'll get a pretty good deal.

It seems like what the Civic/Corolla was back in the late 90s.

It looks like you'll be looking at B-segment cars. A lot of former c-segment buyers are now being forced into B-segment cars because most of the c-segment vehicles have gone upmarket.

I would look at a Fit or Fiesta.

And it doesn't seem like the 2s are selling. There's one dealer with a couple dated from 7/10

That and my 53 y/o petite mother doesn't need a large car. Especially since dad has a minivan. If we were going for a fit, we might as well get a Civic for the same price.

The civic has become a Japanese Buick Regal.

A Fit is still somewhat agile and fun to drive.

I second the Mazda! Sadly, it didn't even pop into my mind till recently mentioned. Mazdas are very nice cars. A shame they don't market themselves more aggressively.

if getting a 3 i would wait until they stick the new engine in it though. the current one doesn't get very good fuel economy compared to its competitors.

Whatever you guys look at BEFORE you buy make sure you check with the insurance company. They don't CARE how old you are or HOW you drive as much as WHAT you drive.

I drive a Corolla and love it. But I PAY a LOT of $$$ for insurance every year even though I've got a excellent driving record, live in a low loss area and drive it like an adult.

The Civic is another one of those high cost vehicles to insure.

Another item to add to the list.

Take care, Bill

You can't go wrong with a Civic or Corolla. I actually like the new Corolla a lot but Civic is very sporty and will be something that you can have once your mom get another vehicle. Personally, a Honda Fit is very nice and cheaper than Civic while better equipped. It is also very easy for short folks to drive.

By the way, your mom is doing the right thing with getting her own ride. I wouldn't stand for car sharing. My wife has her own car, the best and newest one and I drive an beater to work. We also have a big 4x4 Bronco for vacation and short trip around town.

Used vehicles are way to expensive now. I was just at the GM dealer and they had a used 70k mile 09 Silverado on the lot for $18k. It was a pretty base truck the new 2011 version would be $21kish with all the rebates.

Who in their right mind would not spend the extra $3k for a 0 mile truck that's 3 years newer with a full warranty?

Now is a horrible time to buy used, just get something new and be done with it.

BTW she should check out the latest Civic. Honda is aiming for her demographic with them.

Civic costs a lot to insure simply because it is high theft vehicle. The same goes for American muscle cars and sport SUVs. I would think a Corolla would be cheap to insure as it Toyota has literally labeled itself as old people's cars.

The Camry in my sig is hers, but my sister goes to school 250 miles away from home in a small town with no public transportation and my mom feels better that she has a car. The new Corolla has been cheapened too much. The inside is what GM was like a few years ago.

We like our Fit. It has so many little features that scream "Handy!" Things like rear doors that open nearly 90*, or the trick rear seats. It even drives decently, to boot.

You might run into problems getting one right now since the US-market models are assembled in Japan with Japanese-sourced parts.

Exactly the reason to consider it. The OP is looking for a bargain new vehicle. Anytime a manufacturer rolls out the newest, best.... it always costs a premium. He never said the bestest MPG's was necessary. You want a deal, especially in this segment, you gotta go to the older entrants. He already ruled out Corolla. Civic and Elantra are new and won't be a deal. Mazda3 is the best choice given criteria listed. End of thread.
