Good shaving soaps

So, member vavaroom got my attention about shaving the other day. I have two older old spice cups that shaving soap would fit in. Have some real good brushes that were given to me by my brother also. Can anyone recommend a good shaving soap?

too manly for me. i use a shaving cream (Khiel's and previously Cremo from Target) and recently switched to Dr. bronner's shaving soap which is a semi-liquid soap, not a hard soap you desire

I dry shave these days, but back in the day, I did like Proraso. It comes with its own bowl/cup:

I would second Proraso as an easy to find option. I'm currently using Arko, but read a few reviews before you blame me if you hate the smell when it shows up. It does perform well.

The Badger and Blade forum has an endless list of reviews on everything shaving. Lots of good info there.

Cremo is convenient/less messy and works just as good. Put a dime size drop in your hand and just keep adding more water as you work it in. I only shave a couple times a week and a tube will last me a long time.

The same bar of soap you wash the rest of you with. No need to buy a separate thing just to shave with. And you kill two birds with one stone, shave and wash your face at the same time.

Wife just bought me a tube of the Cremo shaving cream, in the Palo Santo scent, along with a bar of their soap in the same scent. Man, it smells good!

I’ve been using that as well. It works pretty good with a safety razor and it’s easy to get. I use it with a shaving brush.

Trumper Eucris shaving cream, like all Trumper products, is also good.

Don't you think washing your face before taking a blade to it is more hygienic? Shaving soap serves a different purpose than soap you use for washing your skin. Regular soap lacks stearic acid and cannot produce a stable lather. Regular soap is also not slippery enough for shaving and will gunk up the blade or blades. And who still uses bar soap? Gross.

Huh? I didn't say to wash your face before shaving. Using soap for shaving is like doing both at the same time. Never have a problem gunking up the blades as I don't let dirt accumulate for days before shaving. And I wouldn't want ANY acid on my face. Who uses bar soap? Most everyone?

My skin's to dry for soap -

I use gold bond moisturizer essentials for men to shave with.

There are a number of bennies to doing this.

1. Works great to avoid razor burn, while shaving as close as soap.
2. Its moisturizer so no need to rinse and use extra water at the end - just rub it into your face.
3. cleans off the blades well, which contributes to long blade life.
4. Only one tube in the dopp kit for travel
5. Works for other areas of the body especially on long plane flights that dry everything out.
6. Its cheap, easy to find, comes in a variety of sizes.
