Good ole McAfee missed another one.

It's a decent balance of resource usage, ease-of-use, and thoroughness. As I understand, the main reason infections slip past it is that they are designed to do so, given its popularity. Same goes for Norton.

It's kind of like how Windows PCs used to be so much more vulnerable than Macs. It's not just that they were insecure; it's also that they were frequent targets because they were the most popular.

...not that that excuses McAfee, of course.

Just saying.

What you see is probably a pop-up ad from spyware/adware but is not legit. It's not a virus/trojan though.

Often times B S toolbars or some software will have this adware in it.

Download spybot search and destroy, update and run it, see what it finds.

For a first line defense, I like prevx. Free version won't clean, but it will tell you the offender. Exceptionally aggressive in my opinion. It's good as a warning system. I don't know how the pay version performs.

I say this after seeing MS defender getting completely run over. Going into its log, the trojan just authorized itself for install.

Actually most of the best rated virus/malware/spyware help forums like Techsupportforum and bleepingcomputer recommend Malwarebytes.org for cleaning and detecting the most infections.

Spybot days are well and truly gone. Use MBAM as a good standalone backup check but for me it's found nothing just like PREVX and all the others since NIS 2009 installed. If MBAM does find anything this forum will be the first to know.

I usually ask Windows users this.

I pay 0 nada, period. I haven't run an worthless antivirus program now for 2 years and have had no issues, period. If people would learn about sandboxing their browser, they wouldnt get infected!

I would agree with you, but the wife has brought home infected flash drives from her work. The flash drive had been on "common" instrument computers. I-net isn't the only source of infection.

Do you feel like writing a brief description and instructions to do so?

http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/07/25/how...sing-sandboxie/

Read the first link to get yourself familiar with installation.

http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?DeleteSettings

Read this link to set up Sandboxie so it automatically deletes the sandbox when your finished surfing the net.

Easy disable auto run.

sandboxie, avast, and MBAM is the best combo for windows xp for my wife's pc. If only I could get her to use sandboxie everytime she surfs the web, I wish you could set firefox to always be sandboxed when you click the firefox icon.

I don't think I've ever actually "paid" for antivirus software before. I used to use free mcafee from comcast internet which was total junk and let viruses through.

When you installed sandboxie, you should've got a icon on your desktop called "sandboxed browser" and it will be yellow colored. All you do then is simply delete the firefox icon, and use the sandboxed browser icon.

When users don't have to sandbox their browser and run AV software I'll take a look. Otherwise it is the same product tweaked and packaged over and over; that works for some people apparently. I recognize it has allowed millions to stay connected and in that aspect is impressive.

I am in academia and for my research (data collection, data reduction, data analysis, and statistics) and teaching need to use several programs that are only made for Windows. I just got a new laptop with Win 7 Home and should get in the mail the upgrade tomorrow for Win 7 Ultimate (I got it for $20 being in academia). Some programs I use haven't been updated to work on Vista, much less Win 7, so I'm looking forward to the Win XP mode in Ultiamte. So far I like 7, Vista was bad.

Most instances I've seen of Windows Defender getting "completely run over" is when the user hit that "Allow" button......I know my mom did it when she first got her computer, looking for screen savers, she found one she liked, hit the Allow button that Defender popped up, and she had some "Security Tool" fake antivirus program running, stating she had 231 infections and the program would only fix them if she gave them her credit card number....

Sooooo......off to safe mode I went, disabled the auto run entries, scanned with Windows OneCare Safety scanner (safety.live.com) and it was able to clear up the fake-av infection....

She was simply duped...Defender asked her to "allow" or "deny" the action, and she hit "Allow" to run, what she thought was a screen saver....

That's me too....I have a couple anti spyware apps on my comp, but nothing that runs in real time....I only use Firefox or Chrome and haven't had an issue with infections.
