Went to local O'Reilly in Costa Mesa tonight to buy a couple Berryman B12 Fuel Treatment cans on sale for $2.99.

Looking at ATF section and they don't have Maxlife in gallon jug, only in quart bottles. A sale girl walked by and ask if I need help, I asked her if she has Maxlife in gallon jug, she went to the back room and found none, she then looked at the computer and found none, she than ask her manager if they carry Maxlife ATF in gallon jug, he said O'Reilly only has it in quart bottle and the price is $6.99/qt.

I told her Walmart has it in gallon jug at $16 something a gallon, she then ask her manager if they can match Walmart price. He said okay but since they don't have it in gallon jug so I need to buy 4 quarts and he will reduce the price down to $16, instead of $27.96.

It paid to ask sale person for discount/price-match in a polite way, you will never know if he/she will give you a discount or not, but you loose nothing in asking for it.

Thats good that they did that, but that killed any profit they were going to make on it.WM buys it in gallon jugs probably for far less than what OR pays for the 4 qts.

Great! Always ask....

If they took a hit, they'll hope you come back for future needs.

Way to go!

A good paint store would do that back in the day. If they were out of gallons of a particular paint you were looking for they'd give you 4 qts. for the same price. Those days are over though. Good on O'Reilly, a little good CS can go a long way.

Meanwhile Walmart does the direct opposite. Oreilys is my favorite car parts place in town customer service wise.

I'd say the moral is, never hurts to ask. That said, have to agree with above poster, based on my experience with O'R's around here this would be a very rare occurrence. I've been told in the past by an employee they don't match WW prices. I did manage to score some PP there awhile back at $2.57/quart on closeout. But the counter jock was unaware of the closeout posted on the website with number of quarts left at each store. But, when asked to check he did find them in the back.

Though I doubt devine intervention was involved, congrats on your success. Or, perhaps it was. (j/k)

I have found that it's pretty common to find great customer service at OR. and I agree with the OP in that it pays to be polite. I have a feeling some of the posters who complain about bad CS don't know the meaning of patience and respect. You can tell by the way they had mouth auto parts employees and lump them all in the same category. I have had great service at OR and will continue to shop there. And they have gone out of their way for me on more than one occasion (only have had 1 or 2 bad experiences and don't go to those locations any more).

I almost bought a coil pack from oreilly that had obviously been sold before, you could see scratched paint on the mounting screw holes, they guy said wow and threw it in the trash can. a month later I asked about their coil packs and they showed me the same one again!!

O'Reilly is no marketing genious though....they sponsored "American Hot Rod" with Boyd Coddington during the final season when the business was in near death throes and after the lawsuits for titling custom fabricated cars as "Vintage" originals.

Sucks that it killed profit for them, but it also killed profit for WM by not shopping there. This is a good thing as it means more stores actually have a chance of survival. WM does have a good oil selection, I like to walk through there and look around if I have time to kill (which is rare). Oil is not a high margin item anyplace... But mass shopping at WM is just bad for everyone, so good for the OP to shop there, and good for OR to ensure they made a sale and satisfied a customer who is likely to shop there again and buy items that make them a profit...

I went to O'Reillys for a window regulator for the wife's car. He didn't have one in stock but ordered it for me at a good price and for way less than the Chrysler dealership wanted. He even apologized that it wasn't in stock. Very professional.

Wow you'd think with all their exposure business would've boomed. And their wheel business.
